Walk-ons no more

| | Comments (1) |

At the end of spring football practice I spoke to UCLA center (this is football now, folks) Micah Reed, who was a walk-on but was awarded a scholarship last season because of his position on the two-deep, and Reed didn't know whether he would be on scholarship next season.
However, I've been told Reed, who is penciled in as the starting center, would remain on scholarship. Ditto for linebacker Josh Edwards and defensive end Tom Blake, both former walk-ons who were on scholarship last season. As previously reported, fullback Trevor Theriot was also placed on scholarship.

Having been a walk-on myself (the school shall remain nameless), I say hip hip hooray for these fellows. It is truly for the love of the game that they continued to chase their dream of playing college ball, and they made it.

Still, one wonders what kind of a team depends so heavily on walk-ons.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
