Westbrook works out for the Clippers

I just ran into Russell Westbrook, after his workout with the Clippers this morning and caught up on what’s turning into a very busy schedule for Westbrook.

Westbrook has been skyrocketing up mock draft lists and is almost a sure-fire lottery pick now. He’s worked out for the Knicks, Sonics and now the Clippers and said he might work out for Indiana too.

The Clippers, of course, need a point guard and most teams are projecting Westbrook as a point guard in the NBA, though some teams see him more of a combo guard.

“It’s gone fast, but it’s exciting at the same time,” Westbrook said. “This is pretty much the most exciting time of my life.

Asked about his metoric rise up the draft board, Westbrook said it caught even him a bit off guard. “Yeah, it did kind of,” he said. “I just continued to work and strive for the best and here I am.”

If he keeps moving up, Westbrook could actually end up being taken higher than his UCLA teammate Kevin Love. The two were roommates at the pre-draft camp in Orlando and have talked frequently during this process.

“Yeah, we joked about that a little,” Westbrook said, when asked if there was a little competition to be the first UCLA player picked. “Whatever happens, I’m happy for Kevin and he’s happy for me. We’re both going to be in New York together.”

Tuesday morning, Westbrook worked out in a group of six players that included: Arizona’s Chase Budinger, LSU’s Anthony Randolph, Mississippi State’s Jamont Gordon, Oregon’s Malik Hairston, and New Mexico State’s Justin Hawkins.
