UCLA Enjoys Another Successful School Year
Teams win three NCAA titles and have nine Top Five finishes

The UCLA athletic program enjoyed another outstanding year in 2007-08. The first program to win 100 NCAA team titles, UCLA got a great start on its second 100, capturing NCAA championships in women's water polo, women's tennis and men's golf.
UCLA placed second nationally in competition for the Directors' Cup, which is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors, USA Today and the U.S. Sports Academy, for the third straight season.
In the Directors' Cup competition, the Bruins scored 1,182 points for their second-place finish, earning points in 10 women's sports and eight men's sports. Stanford finished first and Michigan, Arizona State and Texas rounded out the Top Five. The final official standings and point totals will be announced on June 26.
UCLA also placed second in 2006-07 and 2005-06 and placed third in both 2004-05 and 2003-04. In the 15-year history of the Directors' Cup, UCLA and Stanford are the only two schools to finish in the Top Six every year. Overall, UCLA has finished second six times, third five times, fourth once, fifth twice and sixth once.
UCLA has won 17 NCAA team championships in the last six years, the most of any school in the country. Those 17 titles have been won by 11 different programs. UCLA teams have also placed second 13 times in that five-year span.
In 2007-08, UCLA won its fourth consecutive NCAA women's water polo championship, its first NCAA title in women's tennis and its second in men's golf. The Bruins finished second in women's golf, tied for third in men's basketball (third straight Final Four), women's soccer (fifth straight College Cup) and men's tennis, placed fifth (tied) in women's volleyball and softball, seventh in women's gymnastics, 14th in men's indoor track and field and 17th (tied) in baseball and men's soccer.
In addition, UCLA played in a bowl game for the sixth consecutive year and won five league titles (women's soccer, men's basketball, women's tennis (tied), men's tennis and women's water polo) and two conference tournaments (men's basketball and women's water polo).

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
