Bruins advance in Olympic track trials

Despite Leach's disappointing competition, several Bruins advance on
day one of Olympic Trials

The 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials got off to a rough start for the Bruins
as probable Olympic team member and current Bruin Nicole Leach
stumbled over the seventh hurdle and was unable to make up ground in
her race. She ended the race in 23rd-place (1:00.90) and will not
advance to the next round. Despite Leach's disappointing race, a few
Bruins did advance to the next phase of their events in Eugene, OR.

Leading the way was former Bruin Sheena (Johnson) Tosta, who ran the
second-fastest 400m hurdles time of the day (56.07) to advance to the
semifinal round. In the discus, Suzy Powell-Roos advanced to Sunday's
final as she placed second with a throw of 201-5.

Incoming freshman Ryann Krais was just three places shy of advancing
to the semifinal in the 400m hurdles as she posted the 19th-best time
of the day (59.39). Krais will next head to Poland for the World
Junior Championships where she will compete in the heptathlon.

Sophomore Krishna Curry missed a spot in the 800m semifinal as she
placed 20th overall (2:05.91). Senior Renee Williams was 22nd in the
triple jump with a mark of 41-1. In the 100m, former Bruin Hasani
Roseby advanced out of the first round with the 19th-best time
(11.29). In the quarterfinal, Roseby placed 19th overall with a time
of 11.19, but does not advance to the semifinal round.

On the men's side, former Bruin Brandon Johnson ran the eighth-best
time of the day in the men's 400m hurdles (50.11) as he advances to
the semifinal round. Former Bruin Kyle Erickson was 22nd overall with
a time of 50.81, while fellow alum Jon Rankin was 24th in the 800m
(1:49.73). Neither advances to the next round of their respective
event, but Rankin will run in his premier event, the 1500m, later in
the week.
