Tom Hansen, the long-time commission of the Pacific 10 Conference, is retiring next summer. Here is the release from the Pac-10 site.
I have heard Mr. Hansen talk several times, and he comes across as a soft-spoken, sincere, and earnest gentleman. And on his watch there is no doubt the Pac-10 has enjoyed unparalleled success.
However, with his retirement, and with the BCS contract coming up for renewal in a few years, there might now be a chance of a Plus-1 football format i.e. maintaining the integrity of the bowl system, but at the end of the games, choosing the top 2 teams to play for the national championship. There won't be a playoff system in our lifetime (unless you are 5-years old, and then maybe), but the plus-1 system means the top 4 teams playing in the bowls will have a chance to be No. 1 without the intervention of a computer system.
