Brendan Lane, a power forward out of Rocklin High in Northern California committed to UCLA today.

``I wanted to play at a big-time school with the chance to win a national championship and learn defense from a coach like Ben Howland,'' Lane told Tim Haddock.

EDIT:
Here is a link to the story Tim filed later this afternoon.

Jill/Tim/Romona, can you give us any more info on this kid? rivals.com has him as a 6'9" PF 4 star recruit but are there any other details you have? much appreciated.

Ask and you shall receive :)

Lane is either 6-foot-9 or 6-foot-10 depending on which listing you use. Most have him at 6-foot-10. He can play power forward or center. He was originally recruited by Stanford, Cal, Arizona State and Virginia and seemed interested in staying in Northern California until both Stanford and Cal changed their coaching staffs.

As a junior, he averaged 20 points, 11 rebounds and 4.5 blocks.

Scout says: Good-looking forward with nice hands and feet. Solid frame and good athlete. Nice feel for the game and plays with good energy. Good shot to stripe. Pretty bouncy and a good shot-blocker. An elite prospect nationally.

Rocklin is only 200 miles away from Fresno, she was close.

Gotta stick up for Jill a bit: She's down at the US Open right now, covering golf. So if the geography is slightly off, let's cut her some slack :)

But yes, you guys are right, Rocklin is closer to Sacramento than Fresno.

Rocklin is in between Sacramento and Auburn, but isn't everything north of Bakersfield really Fresno anyway?
It all pretty much smells the same.

Tim/Ramona,

Can you give any information on what the Bruins summer league plans are? Which of the LA summer leagues will the players participate in?

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
