Westbrook and classes

| | Comments (20) |

UCLA guard Russell Westbrook is no longer attending classes, but sources said he made arrangements with several of his professors to receive incomplete grades until his NBA status is decided.
While Westbrook is expected to remain in the draft, barring an injury during workouts, and be a lottery pick, his current plan is to return to UCLA in the summer and finish those classes. That will help UCLA, which would not take as big a hit in the APR if Westbrook leaves UCLA in good academic standing.

I'm glad Westbrook is leaving. He was the one guy on our team that seemed like he should have been playing on USC or some other hotdog school. May he and Love waste the rest of their career on the pine pony.

wow. westbrook sleep with your sister or something?

Meh, he'll say the same thing about Holliday, Anderson and Lee this coming year.

VB said:

Actually, Westbrook leaving has nothing to do with why I'm not a big fan of him. I never liked his personality or playing attitude. I'm glad he gave us two decent years, but he is not one of my favorite players.

And don't get me started on Love. I will NEVER consider that guy a Bruin. Guy is an idiot.

Not to sound like a skeptic, but players always say that they will finish up classes. Very few follow through. Westbrook will be riding the highs of being a lottery pick and my guess is that he won't be finishing up classes over the summer.

VB said:

There is absolutely no way on God's green earth that Westbrook is going to set foot in another UCLA classroom. He and Love do not care about diminishing UCLA's APR. Good riddance.

At least OJ Mayo and Davon Jefferson finished up their 6 units at USC. They care about USC even though they will also be lottery picks. But I agree with your sentiments, this one-&-done thing stinks.

"The most important thing about basketball is that O.J. Mayo and Davon Jefferson passed the minimum six units in the spring semester to avoid losing scholarships under the APR guidelines.
But the program did not win any other awards this semester academically with a 2.08 overall GPA, which is quite a drop from the last spring's 2.52 GPA, which even included three players who dropped out of school. Even last fall, the team GPA was 2.37. But that's one of the repercussions of Kyle Austin, who was a pretty good student, transferring to UC Riverside."

Yes, how dare Westbrook show emotion playing an emotional game in big-time situations. And how dare he be our best on-ball defender (or at least 1A with Luc) and comport himself with class off the court. I don't care that he locked down a probable top-3 pick in a rivalry game or that he was our only player able to play up to the level of Memphis. Give me people with no emotion or athleticism any day over evil Russell Westbrook.

Also, what's with the random personal attack on Kevin Love who just gave us the best season by a UCLA big man in a long time? Would you rather our team be full of Ryan Walcotts and Rico Hineses who will stay for four years and maybe work as hard as Westbrook and Love? If UCLA's APR ever dips to levels when we are penalized scholarships, it will not be the fault of the players going to the NBA. It must be a shame hating the team you follow.

Alex18,
Thanks for your brilliant assumption. "I hate the team I follow." That makes perfect sense. I just criticized Love and Westbrook and that means that I hate the team I follow.

Absolutely brilliant.

Where in the world is this hate against Westbrook coming from? How can you call yourself a bruin fan if you can't even support a fellow bruin when he's finally reaching his dream of playing in the NBA? GOOD FOR HIM for working hard last summer to go from being a player who rarely saw playing time in his freshman year to a potential lottery pick in the NBA draft. Russ has been nothing but a team player, and we LOVED him here at UCLA. Not only did he give us a fanstastic year this year and NEVER complained in his freshman year, Russ loves UCLA and he's always at other UCLA sporting events to cheer our teams on.

As a current student at UCLA, I've been told by some of the basketball managers that there has never been a nicer player than Russell Westbrook to have played at UCLA, and they're all quite sad that he's leaving. Even on campus, you can tell that he is BY FAR the most friendly player from our basketball team that you'll meet. He deserves our undisputed support, and we at UCLA will ALWAYS consider him a Bruin.

Whether or not he actually ends up making it to his summer classes (things happen. Its life. Get over it), I really doubt that he would go through all the trouble of making arrangements with his professors if he really didn't intend, at the time, on coming back to finish up the classes in the summer. Remember, he could have easily dropped his classes in ninth week like Kevin.

VB,
When you say you're glad that one of our best players is leaving early, it definitely sounds like you don't want whats best for the team. If fact, I started reading your comment and immediately thought "oh, this guy is from SC....wait....'our team'?!"

Next time you'll probably post "I hope we lose to SC in football this year" and then be surprised again that people think you hate UCLA

Fine, fine, fine. I apologize for criticizing Westbrook. I admit, he did contribute a lot and does seem like a great guy.

However, I still do not have any stitch of respect for Kevin Love. Mr.

"I'm coming to UCLA to win a championship, and will not be satisfied until I do. I love being mentioned alongside the greats who played at UCLA like Bill Walton and Kareem. I love John Wooden and I wax his car every day and do his laundry and wish I could be his best friend forever and.... oops... I came up limp in the Final Four and didn't bring a championship to Westwood like I said I was going to do......... ....... ........ .... Maybe I'll just head to the NBA.... Peace out UCLA... Now my daddy can piss and moan about how Howland was a horrible coach and he didn't get me the ball enough..."

While OJ Mayo and Davon Jefferson did finish classes, the USC semester ended like 2 or 3 weeks ago, ahead of the pre-draft camp and everything. It would've been easier for them to finish off classes and prepare for the draft afterwards, so if they DIDN'T finish classes, then they're just lazy.

The spring quarter for UCLA doesn't officially end until next Friday, so it's tough for them to take classes at UCLA and be in Orlando for the pre-draft camp at the same time.

if i had the opportunity to make that kind of money, i would leave too. it's unfair to criticize a lot of these kids, most of them come from families experiencing financial hardship.

Okay, islandbruin, neither Westbrook nor Love come from "financial hardship." Love's father is a millionaire and Westbrook's family is financially stable. Next argument?

And what flew up your skirt, BruinGirl?

Give us your untalented, undraftable 2*s so they can stay at UCLA for 4 or 5 years and at the same time, be flailed alive by fans who will settle for nothing less than an NC every year.

ey VB, my next argument is still my first argument, take the money. the love family, yes they have money. but generally speaking most of these kids don't have deep pockets like you.

how can you speak for the westbrook family and say they are financially stable? do you personally know them?

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
