Answers, Part V

Here is the fifth set of answers:

You have mentioned that Coach Neu was used to recruiting later at his last jobs, and that recruiting is starting much sooner now. Does that mean we should see a boost in recruits coming once it gets nearer or into football season?I didn’t say he recruited later. I said offers were given later because most kids waited until their senior season, or after their senior season to commit. As far as a boost in commitments, I think that will wait until late in the season, when it is apparent what type of season the Bruins will have, recruits will start deciding on UCLA.

Why is it that Cal-Berkely, UCLA, UC Davis,… etc. are all part of the UC school system but they have different admissions standards? I tried to tell a friend it is harder to get into UCLA than Cal but he wondered what specifically made it harder? Each campus has their own academic standards and goals. It would mean UC-Irvine would have the same standards as UC-San Diego and UC-Santa Barbara.

Will Chandler’s move to Offensive Tackle be for one season, or is it a intended to be a permanent move?Rarely is a move done on a one-year basis. The plan is for this to be his new position, but if it doesn’t work out he could shift back to tight end.

When football players redshirt, are they expected to learn the playbook during their redshirt year or do they only perform scout team duties? They have to learn the playbook in training camp, but once the season begins they are learning everyone else’s playbook as a scout team member. So the focus is not on learning UCLA’s playbook.

Nikola Dragovic seems destined for a career on the bench. Will Nikola be encouraged to move on and free up a scholarship like ryan wright & Chase Stanback? Not at this point. I think Dragovic has some interests outside of basketball that could keep him around.

Is Alfred Aboya returning?UCLA coach Ben Howland says he is.

Can you compare the performances of the quarterbacks at the 7-on-7 workouts? if they are not playing against JC’s, do they play against any other non-UCLA players?Kevin Craft looks like he is still learning the offense, and his arm strength remains a concern. Ben Olson looked rusty at first, but improved as the one session with him I witnessed progressed. Kevin Prince has looked sharp, and Nick Crissman has a funky delivery but looks ok. Chris Forcier was inconsistent the days I saw him.
And no, I do not believe UCLA can play against other non-UCLA players.

I have heard rumors that Forcier will move from Quarterback to another position. What is the most likely position change for him?I would say receiver, but that may not happen because I heard he and his family want him to remain at quarterback.

The UCLA baseball team lost a lot of talent to graduation and the pros. How good is the baseball team’s incoming freshman/recruiting class?I don’t know much about the baseball team, but I consulted a friend who does, and got this reponse:
UCLA signed seven players to national letters-of-intent in November 2007. Four of those players were drafted, and two of those players have signed minor-league deals — infielder/pitcher Tyler Chatwood (Angels, 2nd round selection) and infielder/outfielder Cutter Dykstra (Brewers, 2nd round selection). The two other drafted players are right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole (Yankees, 1st round selection; 28th overall pick) and first baseman/outfielder Clark Murphy (Rangers, 5th round selection) — those players drafted have until August 15 to sign with their respective teams…otherwise, they attend school.
The incoming class should be solid. The program receives a highly-touted arm in Gerrit Cole, should he choose to attend UCLA. The other three players signed to NLIs are Tyler Rahmatulla, a talented infielder from Mater Dei; Chris Amezquita, a talented infielder from Servite; and Steve Rodriguez, a three-year varsity catcher from St. John Bosco.
