Answers, Part I

I can tell the season is getting closer because the excitement is brewing and there were loads of questions. As I get to the first set of what will be 11 sets of answers throughout today, please take the time to answer this poll.

Where do you sit at the UCLA football games? Even though you aren't a fan of UCLA, do you still enjoy being at the games? Do you ever get a little bit excited when the Bruins have a big win (i.e. 13-9 against USC)?I sit in the press box, about the 40-yard line, and it is a great seat because you can see everything develop on every play. I love going to games because college football is one of my favorite sports to watch. And I don't get excited about whether UCLA wins or loses, but rather when it is a close game with important coaching decisions and big-time plays.

Presuming Ramirez is able to get his schoolwork in order, will he return as a running back? Or might he get moved back to the secondary? I think it is too early to tell whether he will come back as a running back or in the secondary. The first thing that has to happen, though, is he must get eligible. He blew a big opportunity with this because the coaching staff is not happy with him.

Has Olson been participating in the 7-on-7's? Although this format is somewhat limited, does it appear Craft has improved his grasp of the playbook and closed the gap on Olson? Olson has taken part in the 7-on-7s. As for Craft, the drills are so vanilla and the defense is doing so little to confuse the quarterback that it is too early to tell what type of grasp Craft has on the playbook. But if Craft doesn't improve his grasp of the playbook in the offseason, there is a huge problem.

How is Raymond Carter looking and will he be ready for fall practice?I asked coach Rick Neuheisel, and he said Carter is 100 percent and ready for training camp. That said, Carter seems to be hit-and-miss when I see him. Certain days he looks great, and other days he is tentative.

Do the Angels need to pick up another bat or can they take Boston in the AL playoffs with their current roster?Geez, I'm not up on my cricket. Sorry.

How much will Christian Ramirez really be missed? Couldn't a freshman like Milton Knox come in and have similar if not more profound impact? Also, is Ryen Carew's football career done?I don't think Ramirez will be missed much because of Aundrea Dean and Derrick Coleman. I think Knox isn't high on the pecking order right now, but that could change. And don't forget, Raymond Carter should play behind Kahlil Bell as well. As for Carew, I'm not sure if it's done. I will check it out.

Any update on the academic progress of the JC lineman recruit Donovan Edwards? He is supposed to find out his grades next week, but I am hearing UCLA is pleased with what he's done and the Bruins expect him to be in training camp when it opens Aug. 5.

Does Ramirez being ineligible take the redshirt tag off of Milton Knox and Jonathan Franklin? With Ramirez being really involved in KR I'm assuming this gives Franklin a great shot to ear that position in fall camp.I don't think the red-shirt comes off Knox and Franklin, mainly because of what I mentioned above. In the pre-training camp pecking order, I believe Aundre Dean and Derrick Coleman are ahead of Knox and Franklin in the backfield. And I think Franklin would be given a chance to return kicks in camp regardless of Ramirez's situation.

Is QB Jacob Crook still on the team??I don't know, but I have not seen him out with the team this summer.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
