Returning players are talking about the performances of cornerback Aaron Hester, safety Rahim Moore and receiver Antwan Moutra during the first week of 7-on-7 passing drills, but I also had a few players speak about tight end Cory Harkey.
According to one of the players, Harkey has the ability to be UCLA's next great tight end once he gets acclimated to college. However, with Ryan Moya (who looks markedly bigger and stronger) and Logan Paulsen on the roster, not to mention Nate Chandler, I'm hearing Harkey will red-shirt.

Thats interesting. I thought he was one of our weaker commits from 2008 along with the two Oline commits.

That's good to hear. We haven't had a dominant TE since Mercedes Lewis graduated. Hopefully these guys can step up this year.

As for our OL commits, I personally saw Jeff Baca play a few times at Mission Viejo High. He is a tough kid. The guy will be a stud in a couple of years. Very nice guy too.

Harkey was rated the 9th best TE in the country by ESPN so maybe they were the ones to get it right.

With the lack of depth on the OL, I suspect we are going to see a lot of 3 TE formations. That puts Harkey only an injury away from PT.

i saw Harkey at the one day camp last year. He made Austin Holt look really, really, slow and unathletic. I expect big things from him.

Remember, the kid was probably a mid-major caliber basketball player --- very athletic -- feed him some steak for a year and he'll be a stud.

would be nice if after 4 years of high quality play including an outstanding senior year we would know that its spelled MARcedes Lewis.

Yeah, but Marcedes sounds like a broken down Mercedes.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
