It's a stretch

| | Comments (6) |

In an effort to avoid injuries, particularly to the legs, UCLA is doing a lot of stretching before and after workouts this summer. It is something new strength and conditioning coach Mike Linn did in spring practice, and he continues to do it during the offseason conditioning drills.
Ten to 15 minutes are spent stretching after workouts in an effort to increase flexibility, which, in turn, he believes will reduce injuries.

Finally, there is a plan to do something about the all those inconvenient injuries that deplete the depth of a football team. This year's squad looks like they will need everyone to remain fit and healthy for the whole year. Flexibility of course does a whole lot of good things in addition to cutting down on injuries.

In the book, "Coaching Football for Dummies," did Karl Dorrell skip the 'stretching' chapter? Sounds like this is the first time our players have stretched in 4 years.

It is nearly imperative after age 30 if one wants to keep playing basketball and volleyball with the younger guys.

VB....Dorrell actually had his players participate in Yoga. From what i've heard from a friend who knows a player on the squad. Dorrell never said much in practice, including when the team messed up. CRN is much different....

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
