a punter should never be on the cover of a media guide.

is it supposed to be sarcasm?

Those are flat out terrible covers!

Are they giving this to some freshman design student????

HomeBruin said:

"Then...now...forever" is a little cheesy. Other than that, I don't think they're so bad.

What's wrong with them, Milt? In over 20 years of being around print graphics, I've seen a LOT worse. So what SPECIFICALLY upsets your aesthethic sense? I'm holding my breath...

Well Mario,,,

After 30 years as a pretty damned successful artist,,,I say it plainly sucks to put it lay terms, and "having seen a LOT worse" is no endorsement. THAT'S a criteria for mediocrity....or is this what happens when desktop publishing software becomes readily available to the masses.

We're talkin' elite college athletic program here. Pull a student from Art Center if they have to...it would be a LOT better, AND on the cheap.

It should read:

"Then... now ... forever... (minus the Dorrell Era)"

To quote the wizard of odds re: UTEP's media guide,

"...it's never a good idea to put a kicker or punter on your poster because it screams, 'The rest of our squad isn't very good.'"

Yes, slogan is weak. They should have said, "BRUIN FOOTBALL 2008...NOW!". Meaning, the time has come. Our history has not been that great the last 10 years.

Also, am I missing something? Why is Logan Paulsen getting so much love, what has he done? 2007 stats: 12 catches, one TD - look it up.
Verner, Price, or Carter should be the only ones there...big drop off after that. These guys will most likely make 1st for 2nd team All Pac-10.

This cover isn't great, but there have been worse. If you think this is bad, you should take a look at the media guide cover for men's basketball in Howland's first year. Absolutely atrocious.

We are missing out on tons of money here. Produced and marketed properly, football media guides can generate at least an extra million dollars into the athletic budget. $20 a pop times 70,000 fans. What do you get? A cool 1.4 million.

rofl why is there a punter on one of our covers????

Jose007 Author Profile Page said:

Usually I refer to the cover as the front portion of the media guide, not the back.

It's like the cart leading the horse, ucla2k3...if a program is successful, it will sell a lot of gear and other concessions like media guides NO MATTER WHAT the covers looks like...the UCLA Athletic Dept. has to work with what resources they do have and if their punter happens to be one of the better ones around, then that's who going to make the cover (albeit the back cover, mindshed). Let's face it, 2008 is a tough sell based on 2007 so the Bruins have put on a brave face and hope to improve on last year's performance which can and should be done. BTW, Milt, I'm still waiting specific constructive comments regarding what you would have done if you got the job...would you make the front cover more busy, make the back cover less busy, what?

I like the 'unity' picture, and I like the idea of shots of a variety of position players instead of one big picture of the star player (usually QB or Running Back). And don't underestimate the value of a punter, remember Ray Guy, wasn't he a No. 1 pick one year?

Bruintx Author Profile Page said:

I don't think the average media guide buyer gives a rats behind what the covers look like. So personally, I dont think its a big deal. After 26 years as a season ticket holder, Ive never heard anyone at a game say "what a cool cover, lets get one!". As for the punter, I have no problem with that. In fact, I'd have no problem with putting both the punter and place kicker on it. I think Perez and Forbath both deserve it. If the offense struggles as most people think, they will be two of the most important guys on the team this year, like it or not!

more punchy and less random placement, mario,,,,and as someone said, this can generate income and is a good marketing tool,,,so it's not something you hand over to a freshman art student. The cover does nothing but cut and paste images.

And I ain't gettin' paid for my advice.:):):),,,but here's one for free.
I CAN'T EVEN SEE "2008 FOOTBALL" and "UCLA" ain't much better.

Terrible, terrible design. And just because I say it, it doesn't make me a bad Bruin fan. So, homers who can't handle criticism of anything UCLA, please lay off. Looks like it was designed with $5 publishing software, 10 years ago.

Coronabruin said:

In Art Director terms, the cover is a fine example of "Nephew Art".

As in "I have a nephew who was an art major that we can hire cheaply.."

The cover is fine. I like the collection of Golden Domes huddled together. It also takes me back to one memorable December day when the UCLA Football team, during a timeout, huddled on the field in Unison!! That was Awesome!!!

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
