Ben Howland received a raise yesterday that will pay him nearly $2 million this year and $2.3 million in the final year of the seven-year contract. Plus, there's incentives.

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
Sometimes I feel as if there is only one lone voice crying out to a sea of misguided souls.
Howland's salary is "well-deserved" agrees well over 80% of the people on this blog. But compared to what? Other coaches of equal caliber?-- yes. But compared to schoolteachers, firemen, policemen, and the garbage collectors, then no.
And just wait until this country really falls apart a few years hence with its $1 billion a day unbalanced budget. When Americans stop buying products, then the t.v. revenue used to pay these coaches will dry up. You will see coaches begging for 6-figure jobs. Just like the rest of us. And wouldn't that be poetic justice.
Bruin Fans... as I stated in the post below also regarding Ben's salary, ONLYTHETRUTH always posts comments to stir the bag. I can understand why this $uC supporter likes to read our sites (much better then their own). Remember, just ignore what ONLYTHETRUTH says.

Coach Howland has almost single-handedly returned the UCLA basketball program to national prominence. He deserves every single penny of this extension and more.

I love Howland. They could pay him 10 million a year and I would be fine with that.
