Answers, Part II

Here is the second set of answers:

So, we learned last week that the offensive line went on the same snap count all year. Is it also true that two years ago we never ran the shotgun because our center at the time, Robert Chai, couldn't successfully execute a shotgun snap?
Yes, that was part of the problem. Chai's snaps were not fast enough back to the quarterback. Instead, the football floated, like a bubble hanging in the air.

I'm not sure if this is the type of question that you're looking for but I was wondering if there is a way your page can be used for exiled Bruins fans such as myself to find each other/bars to gather around and watch the games...I just moved to San Diego and I'd love to find some Bruins to meet up with...
I think that could be done. Perhaps during game weeks I'll do a post where everyone can comment on where they are watching games. We'll see how it works.

How many season tickets has UCLA sold so far?
I asked UCLA and am waiting for an answers.

With how impressive Taylor Embree's hands are, does the coaching staff still intend on red-shirting him? Him and Marcus Everett look to me like they are by far our best two receivers.
I think it is up in the air, and that is even with Embree out for a week or so with a sore shoulder. He has tremendous hands, but there are questions about his strength and ability to get off the line of scrimmage against press coverage. As of right now, I would put it 50-50 he red-shirts.

Any news on the basketball front as far as is everyone on campus now? Who is looking good this summer? How is Roll's foot doing?
I haven't been to pickup games in a few weeks, but I will stop by in the next week and give a report of what I see. As far as Roll's foot, he continues to recover and the word is he will be ready once practice begins in October.

Who are the guys who run Bruinsnation.com? Why are they always so critical of you? Are they jealous of the amount of hits you get on the site?
I don't know who runs it, and I rarely read the site. However, I do check it out once every few weeks to see what is being written. And I do find it ironic they are willing to rip the media for certain things, but post everything written. Also, I find it humorous (yes, humorous) that sometimes they post stuff saying I wrote it, when it was something Jill Painter wrote, or vice versa.

What did you think of DumpDorrell.com when that was up and running?
I found it strange how people that professed to cheer for UCLA ran a web site condemning the program they supposedly love. Also, there was a thought it had some influence on UCLA's administration, but, in fact, it did not.

Now that you have watched a week of practice, do you think our O-line will be better than originally suspected? I keep hearing from everyone that they are showing improvement.
No, I actually think it could be worse than I initially thought. There's a reason 10 days into practice guys are being shifted all over the line. And UCLA is hopeful converted defensive tackle Jess Ward will be able to play on the offensive line early in the season, and that is not a good thing. And after 10 days of practice, there better be improvement. They shouldn't be getting worse, should they?

At this point, where would you rank the Harwell/Price tandem in terms of the best defensive lines in the nation? Top 10? Top5? #1?
I don't know enough about the rest of the nation to rank them with everyone, but I do believe it is the best defensive tackle tandem in the Pac-10.

Chai was also a pretty poor blocker and had trouble creating space during QB sneaks. With all of these issues, I really wonder why Aaron Meyer wasn't used more. I remember the few games Meyer started, our run game was actually pretty good.

There are a number of ways to connect with fellow-Bruins in a new area. Check with the Alumni Assn for a list of Bruins Clubs - I belonged to the DC Bruins when I lived there - great group! When I moved to New Mexico, I just posted on the gobruins chat list asking if anyone who lived in the Albuquerque area would contact me. Someone did and our families now get together to watch games and even do a road trip every year to an away game within reasonable driving distance from us. You can join the gobruins list by sending an email to: GoBruins-on@go-bruins.com. Or just check with one of the fine Ucla sites that are available. These include bruinzone.com, bruinblitz.com, BRO (ucla.scout.com). There's also bruingold, bruinnation, bruinbasketballreport.com and I'm sure I'm missing others. The first three have very active boards with posters from across the country on them - I'm sure they'll be happy to add you to their local groups to gather to cheer our teams on

When the games have not been on TV in San Diego I have gone to the Trophy's in La Mesa and there is a pretty good contingent there.

Just today I saw a neon 'Go Bruins' sign at Champs Pub & Deli in the Miramar area (7040 Miramar Rd, San Diego, CA 92121 858-530-0622) but I have never been there for a game.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
