Answers, Part IV
Here is the fourth set of answers:
can you compare the 2003 O-Line guys to the 2008 O-Line guys?
To refresh your memory, here are some of the luminaries from the 2003 squad that Holy Toledo left behind: Ed Blanton, Shane Lehmann. Paul Mociler, Alex Potasi, Robert Cleary, Tyson Clayton, Eyoseff Efseaff, Steve Vieira, Mike McCloskey, Robert Chai
It wasn't very good, but at least two of the guys (Blanton and Vieira) got shots at the NFL. In looking at UCLA's current offensive line, I don't know if two guys will get shots at the NFL. I know three guys who may get shots (Micah Kia, Darius Savage and Nate Chandler), but I think it is too close to call. But at least in Dorrell's first season, the offensive line had experience.
It seems to be an article of faith around here that UCLA has the highest academic standards in the world for their student athletes... so what's the story? How strigent are the admissions standards? Their is no way they have the same standards as the normal student body, but I see you mentioned that D. Edwards went to Cal because he couldn't get in here (shocked me). How do the standards compare to other high academic/ high sports schools (U of Mich., UNC, Duke, Cal, Stanford... even ugh USC)?
Look, for years this has been a topic of contention between Cal and UCLA folks. If you want to believe there is no difference, then believe it. Stanford is the toughest, followed by UCLA. I don't know how the rest stack up, but I can't remember a kid (not saying it didn't happen, only I can't remember it) being NCAA eligible and not getting into Duke or Michigan.
What are your "sources" Dohn? According to Cal insiders, Edwards received A and B on his summer courses and that the only reason he had to take those two classes was because of 24 unit requirement in order to transfer to UC as a sophomore.
Don't you think if I was willing to divulge my sources, I would have written it in the story?
Is Chane Moline's first name pronounced "Shane" or "Chain"?
It his "Shane"
We have two players named Micah. I think the name should be pronounced "Mike-ah." I've heard it pronounced "Mick-ah." Which is it?
It is "Mike-ah."
Why doesn't Chuck White, the great P.A. announcer for the football and basketball teams get mentioned in the media guides or the gameday programs at all? I see that Chris Roberts always seems to get a page, so should Chuck.
Because Chris Roberts is a member of the media, and he is listed as such. Media members are listed.
Great Q on the Adidas contract --
Brian, how would that compare with usc's contract w/ ESPN? Or their contract w/ OJ Mayo & his handlers?
I don't know because USC is a private school so it doesn't have to release its contract information like UCLA, a public school, must do.
With Edwards out of the picture, who is considered most likely to win the vacant starting offensive tackle spot? Harris? Chandler? Ekbahtani?
The first opportunity will be given to Harris. Chandler is intriguing, but hasn't played the position. The thing about Ekbatani is he can be versatile and playing a number of positions along the offensive line, which is why UCLA will first look to Harris at the right tackle spot.
Whats the story on Derrick Coleman? Is he completely deaf?
Just about. I did a story on him that ran signing day. Here is a link to it at thefreelibrary.com.
Have you seen "The Dark Knight?" What did you think?
I have not. Two small kids, so that explains that. But was it any good?
Do you see the possibility of UCLA winning the Pac10 in the next few years?
It is possible, but think the first realistic shot will be the 2010 season.
Is there a recruit that you would like to see howland get a commitment from? If so why???
Not really.

This is

"The Dark Knight" was excellent -- non-stop story line with plenty of surprises. The only thing missing was Katie Holmes. Her replacement, Maggie Gyllenhaal, was fine, but she gives a different feel to her character. You need to line up a babysitter and see the movie in the theater.
any good??
when does a piece of crap movie make $300million in the 2weeks??
Sneak out and watch it Brian :)
Hey, anonymous, here's a piece of crap movie that made big money fast: Titanic.
Here's a little tip: just because a movie makes money doesn't mean it's good.
I like this second-person banter by Anonymous -- third-person is so cliche now that everyone is doing it.
Your source wasn't Traci Pierson, was it? Because he initially wrote that Edwards didn't have the grades to get admitted to UCLA but edited out that portion later on when Cal people found out that it was just a complete BS.
Edwards didn't get into UCLA because he didn't submit the final transcript, not because he didn't have the grades. Why should he send the transcript to UCLA when he's going to Cal, right?
Hope that helps.
Since when does "crap" win Oscars??
Crap = Catwoman
Donh and Kimbrell have reported the same thing about Edwards and the grade issue. Kimbrell would NEVER use Traci Pierson as a source. Edwards has not called any of these guys in person to clear things up. Cal allows more academic exceptions than UCLA. Whether Edwards was one of them or not who knows. Clearly this is a UCLA admissions problem hopefully more flexibility will be shown in the future.
This is way off topic, I know, but there's no law against crappy movies winning Oscars -- "Titanic" being a good example. Unless you were a 13 year-old girl at the time it came out, the movie sucked (but the special effects were amazing, I'll grant you that.) I can give a hell of alot more examples but this is probably not the correct venue.
Actually Titanic did not make money fast.....see below...
