Answers, Part XIV

Wow, my fingers are tired (no jokes). Here is the last set of answers for this week. Also, I will have updates from the scrimmage tonight and all weekend.

You may have answered this before, but it still puzzles me that Aaron Meyer went elsewhere to play when it's obvious our Oline could use some bodies. Was there other factors that led to Meyer leaving UCLA?
The factor of him leaving was he was not good enough to factor into the equation even with all the depth issues and the injuries.

Who backs up Sloan when Carter is out?
Walk-on Jordan Woolbright did when both were out in Thursday's practice, but in a game and during game-week prep, John Hale will slide over to middle linebacker and Akeem Ayers will go in at strong side linebacker.

How many football season tickets has UCLA sold to date? Are we on the same pace as last year, behind, ahead?
Here is what I posted about it Friday.

How many receivers will get regular time and who will redshirt?
I don't know yet. Here is what I wrote about the receiving situation earlier in the week. But for those not wanting to click and load a page, I think Marcus Everett, Terrence Austin and Dominique Johnson will be in the regular rotation. Gavin Ketchum will also play, and I think Antwon Moutra and Nelson Rosario will play. The red-shirt candidates are Jerry Johnson and Taylor Embree, but either of them could also see the field. That position really hasn't sorted itself out yet.

Some other blogs i frequent (really talking about dodgerthoughts here) on gamedays have an open chat post for open commenting, so we can discuss game action as it goes on. would you consider this?
I will talk to the tech folks and see what they have to say about it and let you know in the very near future.

Do you think the oline will be worse than our oline from last year? The reason I ask is because Bell was on pace for 1000 yards last year with the oline, and if there is not much dropoff, do you think he will rush for 1000 this season?
I think the offensive line will be better because I have much more faith in Bob Palcic than I did Bob Connelly. That said, I think Palcic has far less talent to work with, considering Noah Sutherland, Chris Joseph, Brian Abraham and Aleksey Lanis were on the offensive line last season. And Bell may rush for 1,000 yards, but all that means is averaging 83.3 yards per game last season.

can you describe the differences in coaching style and blocking philosophy between Palcic and Connelly (from last season)? If the change is significant, do you think our OL has picked up the majority of it so far in camp?
Palcic is more rigid in his teachings, but both are using zone blocking schemes. Connelly wanted more his offensive line to be physical and power oriented, and while most offensive line coaches prefer that style, Palcic will be able to adapt to a more finesse style blocking scheme.
The offensive line is progressing during camp, but I'm not sure what that means. Guys should get better in training camp, especially when they were getting questionable coaching instruction last season.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
