Carroll on the ad

| | Comments (11) |

Pete Carroll was asked at his weekly press conference what he thought about UCLA's ad that states: ``the football monopoly in Los Angeles is officially over.'' He was asked what he thought about Rick Neuheisel saying this.
``It's like the presidential race,'' Carroll said. ``The guy's got to say I endorse this.''
Asked again if he thought the monopoly was over, Carroll said: ``I never knew there was domination in football.''

Say what you will about Carroll, and I know some bloggers question his recruiting ethics, but the guy is smart enough to never give opposing teams any bulletin board material.

He is a diplomat above all others, and he stands by his players 100%, right or wrong.

He also does a lot for Los Angeles' poor.

Much of your stuff does not resonate with me, but this post of yours is spot on about Peetie.

Who cares about the ad or Carroll right now?

100% focused on Tennessee.

Let's see what people think in December. In the meantime, people should keep quiet and try and win some football games. I think Rich Rodriguez at Michigan (who's actually built something in the past) has the right approach. Low key and one game at a time.

I have a lot of respect for both Pete and Rick. I think they make a wonderful "team." They both promote their school, and at the same time are respectful of each other. That's the way I wish the fans would be - absolutely for their school, but respectful of other fans. I hate the posturing and posing.

So far, Rick and Pete have been great role models for how to have a fun rivalry. This is just another talking point for everyone.

Carroll is not a diplomat, he's a politician. He's not smart, but he is clever.

Standing by your players "right or wrong" is, by definition, unethical. An ethical coach does not look the other way or support a player who has violated rules. Unfortunately, Carroll has made a career out of doing just that.

"Anonymous" seems to talk a lot about December, but where is he in March and April during March Madness?

carroll is no saint...charitable contributions aside.

I don't care what he thinks about the ads. I just hope it gets under his skin that he's being asked about Coach Neu and UCLA all the time.

Carroll doesn't need to respond. However if he were in Rick's position he would act differently then he acts now. I have respect for Rick putting himself out there, I would expect nothing less from such a competitor. Things must be turned around each and every way possible and Rick is the type of competitor that will make it happen. This is just the beginning! Go Bruins!

I love it. SC and the Pac 10 needs this rivalry! But I do think you have to acomplish something before popping off. The best response I saw was the same ad with "there" on the end of the sentence and the SC logo in place of the UCLA logo. It looks like Rick is pointing over to USC. It's sad that UCLA is only expecting 65K in the Rose Bowl against Ten. Can't even sell out against a SEC team.

The tough part, being a student, is that I expect the student section to be virtually empty for the second-biggest game of the season.

It's unfortunate that UCLA is (I think) the only major D1 school that runs on the quarter system for academics. Every school in the country starts classes next week. UCLA doesn't start for another 4 weeks.

If you only see 4 or 5 people in the student section going nuts, you'll know it's me and my friends representing student pride.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
