Craft-ing some thoughts

| | Comments (16) |

What does everyone think of Kevin Craft being named UCLA's starting quarterback?
(And for those who thought Chris Forcier performed better in the last week, particularly in the scrimmage, please keep in mind he was going against the second-team defense.)

I think Craft performed adequately in the scrimmage and has looked a tad better than forcier. Neither will remind us of Troy Aikman at this point, but either will be an upgrade over the mess we had to endure last year, esp. now that Norm Chow will be calling the plays. I wish Craft well and hope he leads us into the Brehaut-BCS era, circa 2010.

craft is absolutely the right decision.

I think he's okay. I expect that he'll complete 55% of his passes and has a couple more TD throws than interceptions. He seems very prone to throw interceptions, and he never checks down. He always stares down his receivers, and opposing defenses will be jumping the routes of the receivers he is staring at. I say his stats will look like this.

55% completion rate
235 yards a game
21 TD's/17 interceptions on the season

I pray that I am wrong, but he doesn't inspire much confidence. He relied on the spread offense last year, and somebody was always wide open in that offense. He will need to throw a miuch more accurate ball this year.

I trust Norm Chow to pick the best QB for the offense. That is all I need to know.

Not surprised. Craft gives them the best chance to win. He has more game experience than Forcier, and frankly, he is better.

I expect to see both during the year anyway (no way we do not have some QB injuries with our OL) so it doesn't really matter.

I am not surprised with the decision. Craft has more experience and knows the offense better.
I like Forcier's skills, he has a lot of upside.
In the end, I think we will see them both play this year.
I certainly hope Bruins fans will be patient this year, because we are headed in the right direction, but it is not going to happen overnight.

It certainly comes as no surprise to anyone and, like Howland, I trust Chow and Neuheisle implicitly (I could NOT have said that about the last regime). Craft seems like the natural (only) choice and -- not to damn with faint praise -- can't be any more inconsistent or spotty than Olson. Let's just hope he settles in fast, gains alot of confidence quickly and gives it the all-out, gutsy heart that Cowan would have.

personally, I like forcier more:

1. better pocket feel

2. checks down more (ie, makes the higher % play more often)

but I can live with Craft...he's better than Olson. Olson's mental problems and statue-like immobility are huge liabilities for an o to overcome.

Brian... did you really post this? The style of the post and particularly the title has Jill Painter written all over it.....

Doesn't matter. I'm still going to have to take a long and deep gasp every time they touch the ball come game day. Keeping fingers crossed though.

I trust Chow and Neuheisel to make the best choice. That said, I wanted Forcier to win the job, as I feel that the threat his legs pose could help the offense in so many ways, and help disguise/ameliorate the problems on the O-line.

I saw this guy play at MT Sac, he is decent. If the O-line can give him any time, you will be pleasantly surprised.

craft could turn out to be a positive surprise...olson just isnt and will never be a big quarterback, so we arent losing much with this turn of events...bottom line is i look forward to having a real offensive strategist call a game and have them execute a real offense for the fist time since toledo, regardless of overall talent.

Craft is the best choice at this time. He's a coach's kid, knows the offense, and has some D1 experience.

I'm looking forward to the game. :)

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
