Kia's spiral fracture

| | Comments (4) |

UCLA left tackle Micah Kia said he broke his left hand when it got stuck between the pads of a pair of teammates.
Kia said it's a spiral fracture, which according to Wikipedia, is "a fracture where at least one part of the bone has been twisted.''
"It's a spiral of the third,'' Kia said. "It was kinda a freak accident. My arm got stuck in the pads and twisted. My arm stayed in one place and my hand went to another."
Kia said he was told surgery would not be needed.

At least Kia is going to try to play. Someone else on the team, who shall remain nameless, can't see to bounce back from any injury.

GO KIA!!! KILL THOSE VOLS!!!!!!!!

Brian, do you think this means that he will be playing in the Tennessee game? If so, do you think it's a wise decision? I don't know a ton about broken bones, but would forcing him to play risk him re-injuring the bone much worse?

so that sounds... gross. if this happened to me i'd say there's probably an 80% chance i'd cry like a little girl. i guess this is why i never made it past high school freshman football.

on another note, loving the wikipedia reference.

Ouch... spiral fractures are not fun. They are much more difficult to deal with than the regular type of break. Having him play against Tennessee is optimistic to say the least.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
