Post-practice Friday

It was a low impact practice as UCLA readies for its Saturday scrimmage, which will begin at 5 p.m. at Drake Stadium.
UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel said the scrimmage will be 60 to 80 plays, admittedly light, because of the low numbers of available players, especially on the offensive line.
Neuheisel said he was hoping the offense gained "confidence," if anything out of the scrimmage.
Also, Gary Beban, the only Heisman winner in UCLA history, stopped by practice to chat with the Bruins.

Gary Beban, a name that brings back memories that cling to my soul. As most of you know, I am not a ucla fan, but I loved Gary Beban. Why?

1965, SC is killing ucla and Beban for 56 minutes when suddenly the Phoenix rises from the ashes with a long touchdown pass, and than another long touchdown pass, 20-16 ucla. ucla goes to the Rose Bowl to play No. 1 Michigan State, which had killed ucla earlier in the year, I believe. First play in the Rose Bowl, Beban sets the mood with a keeper around right end for some 30 yards. Michigan State is upset.

1967, Beban vs O.J. Everybody (well at least everybody east of Westwood, California) recalls the 64-yard O.J. t.d. run for the victory, but Beban had the game won except for ucla's field goal kicker missing 2 field goals and an extra point. 21-20 SC, and the national title when it really should have been ucla's. And what a difference that could have made in L.A. football history.

Of course, I am not sad it turned out the way it did.

Brian,

Where on Earth do you dig up some of your readers? I'm sorry, but the trojan above this post has lost his way.

P.S. I hope, and would guess, that most of your readers are Bruin fans.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
