Red-shirt stuff

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel listed the freshmen who were not going to red-shirt, and it was similar to the list I provided on the blog Wednesday night.
Those who will be available for the opener are RB Aundre Dean, TE Cory Harkey, WR Nelson Rosario, WR Antown Moutra, DB Rahim Moore, DE Datone Jones, LB Sean Westgate, CB Aaron Hester and DB Tony Dye.
I'm hearing Hester could still red-shirt, as could Dye, depending how both develop in practice and based on the needs of the secondary.
And I know some were wondering, so I asked Neuheisel, and he said WR Taylor Embree, who enrolled in January, was expected to play this season.

What about Jonathan Franklin? Where is he on the depth chart? He's looked good and explosive. Now that I think about it, with Bell, Carter, Dean and Moline it might be smart to red shirt Knox and Franklin to maximize their eligibility.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
