Stanback and UNLV

This is from former UCLA wing Chace Stanback, who is transferring to UNLV.
"All I wanted was to be wanted,'' he said. "That's all I want."

All we wanted was for him to buy into Howland's system and play better...

things just don't work out sometimes no need to knock him, i'll be pulling for him to do well at unlv

Believe me - I never had any ill feelings towards the guy and I still wish him the best, but that comment of his was loaded with innuendo...

I'm not sure where he got the idea that he wasn't wanted at UCLA. Everyone wanted him to succeed, but he came in highly tauted and didn't live up to the hype.

OMG. Please somebody want me. WAAAAAAH. Are you freaken kidding me? Last time I checked that was your mom's job, not Ben Howland's. Maybe this is what he thought Howland meant when he told his mom, "I'll look out for your kid and make sure he's safe ." Maybe he needed his Linus Blanket for security. Could you imagine a player ever telling Adolph Rupp or Bear Bryant something like that? WOW!

I told you guys in previous posts that this kid was weak minded and all you guys did was beat me up. Well, who's smiling now? Nothing personal against the kid either, it never was. I wish him the best and will root for him, unless he's playing you know who. Yet at the same time I will feel quite satisfied and comfortable that we sidestepped this show. Maybe he expected Old Ben to beg him to stay. Hark the thought.

Evidently, Chace was a big hit with the fans.

Why can't we all just get along?

Someone famous said that.

Chace's comments sound eerily similar and perhaps just as pathetic.

Nonetheless, best of luck to him in Lon Krugar's program. I had always felt that if we didn't get CBH that Lon would have been on our short list. He's a proven coach at several levels.

He WAS wanted at the greatest program in college basketball history, that's why UCLA offered to pay for his education while wearing the Bruin Blue & Gold. Stanback was not kicked off the team, he quit on them.

Brian has in the past suggested that the transfers leave UCLA sometimes not purely on their volition, but were are pushed in that direction by the staff. Think of all the involuntary resignations in Washngton and Wall Street.

I don't know if Chase left purely on his accord, or if Howland nudged him out, but whatever the case maybe, I wish him the best of luck. UCLA and Stanback will both be better off from this, so it's time to let it go.

A common tale. High school star gets to college and finds out he's not a star anymore and maybe not even average by the new team's standard. Doesn't get much playing time and all his friends and relatives are saying, "what happened, I thought you were going to knock them dead at UCLA."

He needs to blame someone and it would never be himself, that thought doesn't even cross his mind. Instead of bearing down, working hard and figuring out his role he quits, points fingers at everyone but himself and mopes.

Well, that works out perfectly, Chase. Because we didn't want you. Have fun in Vegas. Good luck even sniffing another tournament birth.

Howland is your dad said:

We just wanted you to play a little defense. Sorry that you just figured out that you have to earn playing time at UCLA. Not really sure what you expecting by picking the top program in the nation to play with. Hope UNLV feeds your ego a little better.

Wow, do we really have this many $C trolls on here?

Stanback was definitely a favorite of us Bruin fans. Those Lee to Stanback alley-oops always got us going and we're sad to see him go, but it was clear that the staff needed to find additional scholarships. Best of luck to him in this new endeavor.

Stay classy trOJan trolls.

What comments do you think are "SC trolls"? A player rejects your school and you turn on him for doing so. What's so difficult to understand? These comments are ucla people. Ours did the same thing when Moody transferred to Florida.

I'd like to say that I wish the best for players that transfer from UCLA, but that ended up not being the case with Travid Reed when he went to Long Beach St. I ended up heckling the guy the whole time when they played at Cal Poly.

Fan4Life Author Profile Page said:

The irony of Chace transferring is his scholarship originally belonged to Taylor King who had committed then went to Duke. Both kids were players of the year in their respective divisions and both ended up transferring. King to Villanova and now Chace to UNLV.

Whatever the case, as it has been mentioned that UCLA was no longer interested in King even though a scholarship was offered, perhaps Chace was feeling unwanted by the staff. Certainly wouldn't be the first time.

Under Howland, this would be the 3rd kid to transfer and probably not the last. Fans need to chill out. Kids just want to play more than sit on a bench for a title contender. And if you're going to say how much more the UCLA degree is worth than the UNLV degree, tell me where Eddie O graduated from.

Well put Fan4Life. These vitriolic comments some people post are disturbing. The kid just wants to play... is that so difficult to understand? He came in a big star and was pushed to the bench so he has moved on. It's what I would have done in the same situation.

Both of you need to get the story straight before you start SPEWING off garbage. The issue is not that Chace wanted to play more, but rather WHY Chace didn't play more. The truth and bottom line is this, it was reported numerous times that Chace had a bad attitude and didn't want to play defense or go through Ben's Defensive Drills. He himself admitted that he wasn't having fun anymore because HE HATED Ben's defensive drills. This is ultimately why he didn't play more and decided to transfer.

I think the point that Fan4Life was trying to make, is that it doesn't really matter if there are transfers. I agree with him on this point. Transfers happen "EVERYWHERE". We have actually had few in comparison. Kansas, the National Champs, actually have had PLENTY in the last 5 years under Bill Self.

Brian, what context was Chase's comment made in? We're all jumping to conclusions and I have no idea what prefaced or followed what on the surface looks like discontent with Howland's program. Please, elaborate!

Chace will shine at UNLV at will get better with age and size. Howland will miss him in two years. Oh, and final four is as far as Howland will ever get UCLA. Chace Stanback for president!

Well, this is alot to take in.
Yes, some fans will miss Chace. But I am sure he will shine in a mid-major program like UNLV. Just because some one is a great player in high school, doesnt mean they will fit in every college program... it happens.

As for the comment about UCLA needing more scholarships..
We only have 11 players... so we have $$ to spare, it seems. But I do find it curiously strange, that Chace is going to Vegas with out a scholarship, and his mother wins enough money to pay out-of-state tuition for his red shirt year since UNLV doesn't have a scholarship available...
Im not pointing fingers..I'm just saying...

I hope it is all in the up and up as I would hate to see the NCAA sniffing around Lon's program looking for trouble. Look how long it took UNLV to resurrect from the Shark's days!

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
