Answers, Part VIII

Here is the eight installment:

It may be too early to tell, but which schools do you see being interested in D Walker as a HC for next season? Arizona? UW? Non Pac-10 teams?
Arizona, Washington, San Diego State. I keep hearing if something happens at UNLV, he will be high on the list.

a lot of rumors are circulating about the recruitments of Gaddy and Bradley. Do you see them annoucing thier decision within the next two or so weeks?
At this point, I don’t know. I think Gaddy could announce by the end of the month.

I noticed howland is going after new recruits. durand scott, noel johnson, matt vogrich, bawa manuri, and roger franklin. Are these serious recruits howland wants or just secondary players?
I’m going with both of your hunches.

How were the fireworks after the game? Did the coaches and players stick around on the field to see it?
They were loud. Other than that, got me. Most of the players and coaches went into the locker room, and I was also under the stadium doing interviews for the majority of the time.

UCLA is currently ranked No.23 in the AP Poll. Do you think the Bruins will be ranked at the end of the year?
Nope. I stand by my belief that it will be a phenomenal coaching job if UCLA is bowl eligible. Remember, Tennessee is considered the fifth of sixth best team in the SEC, and UCLA needed overtime to win at home.

How does someone get started in the college football coaching industry? Do they just “volunteer” as graduate assistants or are these people recruited as well? Same Q for basketball.
They apply for jobs. Many of them start out at their alma maters, or they have another connection to the school, or the coaching staff.

Now that the quiet period is over how do the coaches recruit?
Do they travel to visit recruits or are they pretty limited because they need to be at practices and team meetings?
I’m guessing you’re talking about football. So the coaches can make one phone call a week, and six days during the season can go out and watch games, but cannot talk to prospects when they are out watching games.

How do you become a big time booster? Do these people donate to school and designate their funds to a sports program? How do coaches find out about these people?
Yes, they donate lots of money, and also do other things for the school. Sometimes they are power brokers who get folks with money to donate together, and host parties. And the coaches don’t really find them. The school, precisely the fundraising department, locate these folks.

is it still a competition between Hale and Ayers for the LB spot or is it set that Hale is the guy for the season
It is still a competition.

The coverage UCLA has gotten since Monday has been fantastic……UCLA needs to schedule more Labor Day games! Will ESPN be calling again?
I have no idea. It was a perfect storm of Neuheisel’s debut, Chow being on staff and an SEC school involved. But I wouldn’t count on it for the next few years, at least.
