Answers, Part VI

Here is the sixth set of answers:

Regarding basketball, with the issues going on at Arizona and coaching change at Stanford, do you think UCLA will dominate PAC10 from this point on like Memphis dominating Conference USA?
No, I don’t think it will be that type of domination, but as long as Howland is the coach, UCLA will be a favorite to win the conference most years. Memphis has a special deal going, and the rest of the teams in Conference USA don’t offer what Memphis can, as long as Calipari is the coach.

how many scholarships are awarded to each sports at ucla?
Do you want me to list all the sports? That’ll take a week. Plus, in the Olympic sports, scholarships are sometimes split, where a player can get a two-thirds scholarship, so you can get three players for the price of two.

Where was Datone Jones against UT? You said he was going to be the first sub at DE but I didn’t see him all night.
He did not play. I talked to defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker about it, and he was disappointed he didn’t get Jones in the game. I look for Jones to play this weekend at BYU.

Why is Anthony Dye not playing corner? There is more depth at safety and norris isn’t exactly a great corner.
Because Dye is better suited to play safety. If he was better than any of the cornerbacks UCLA plans on using, he would be shifted there.

What’s the status of Aaron Hester? Redshirt or no?
The plan is to red-shirt him. UCLA loves his upside, but he was very raw coming into the program and needs to learn how to play zone defense.

Do you think the offensive line will be able to perform better in the running game this Saturday?
Possibly, but only marginally.

Is Moutra going to get more reps this week than he did against UT?
I’m not sure. I think it depends on the flow of the game, and how other players are doing.

Where is your favorite place to eat in Westwood?
Palomino. There is also a good sushi place (Hide, I believe) on sawtelle.

do you think we will have any trouble bringing down byu’s backs? if i remember right, they are huge tackle breaking machines
No, because UCLA runs to the ball well and (usually) tackles well. Plus, UCLA didn’t have any trouble doing it last season.

is rahim moore more of a center field, ball hawk kind of safety or a keyes/horton blow you up kind of safety? a mix?
I think that remains to be seen. He has the ability to be either, but I think the center fielder/ball hawk is the path he’s heading down. And, by the way, Keyes was not a blow you up type of safety.

three or four years down the line when people talk about CRN having only his kids in the program, will you consider this freshman class his kids? sure he kept em together, but he didnt really recruit them.
I won’t consider them his kids, but most of the media around the nation will think that way. The key is for them not to be thought of as DeWayne Walker’s kids.
