Answers, Part VIII

Greetings from Provo. Now, onto the eighth set:

Do you have an idea as to which of the regional big time high schools have been pro-UCLA for sending their recruits to UCLA? Are there definite tendencies for certain schools to send their kids to UCLA as opposed to USC per se?
I know UCLA has gotten a lot of Crenshaw kids lately, but without Eric Scott on staff, I’m not sure that will continue. And I do not see schools being UCLA schools like there are USC schools, like Mater Dei of Santa Ana.

How does Andy Keane look during practice at DT? Has he shown the talent to be a possible starter in two years or do you see him as a career backup at DT?
No, not at all. I think UCLA is at a loss for where to play him. He spends his time on the scout team, and sometimes that means scout team offense.

I didn’t understand why Jess Ward moved from DT to OG to be buried on the depth chart. It seems like there are several younger players showing more promise at OG, while depth at DT disappears next year. Isn’t he more valuable at DT?
Well, pad level was always an issue with him, and that is not a good thing for a defensive tackle. Second, he is not buried on the depth chart, he is second team, which means he is one play away from getting in the game. Third, the coaches see him every day, and watch film on him, and think his best chance to play over the long haul is on the offensive line.

I am looking forward to the BYU Game, but what disturbed me about the Tenn Game was how small our CBs(5’8″ and 5′ 9″) are out side of Alterraun Verner(5’11”). Does UCLA cover BYU’s Best Receiver, Dennis Pitta, with a CB, Safety or a LB??
I cannot tell you that. It is a game plan issue.

There have been blog trolls, especially one in particular, that have really drained out the fun in reading and posting comments, a big part of this blog. Is there anything you can do about that?
I will begin to take care of that beginning today. It is a difficult balance, but I will begin to deal with it because I noticed the same thing.

quick Futbol question…will it take an exorcism of sorts to remove the stain of Man U from the Premiership? Seems that your Reds and everyone else will need that kind of Divine Intervention
Exorcism? Maybe not that big of a move, but I do know there is a huge game this weekend that will tell me whether Liverpool can contend for the title this season.

I don’t think we had any trick plays during the Tennessee game. Do you think we’ll see one or two in a game soon?
Only if the situation presents itself. In most instances, in order to run a good trick play (not a fake punt or field goal) the running game has to be working.

how much weight do you place on the polls when assessing a team? I know you think it’s a joke to have polls early in the season but what about after a month? Do you put more weight on the coaches’ poll or the AP?
I put very little weight with either poll. I like to watch as many games as possible and make my own determination. And I put nothing in the coach’s poll, because the coaches do not have time to watch games, so often just vote based on scores, and what their sports information directors tell them.

how do you feel about interested parties pumping you for info through these Q&As (parents, coaches, recruits or even the athletes themselves)?
I love it. It allows me to give information that people want, and brings up issues I sometimes do not think about. Plus, I’ve developed some very good contacts from it. (But am always open to more. Best way to contact me is brian.dohn@dailynews.com)
