Doubling the line

One interesting thing to me about this game, and what folks think of UCLA, is the betting line opened at Fresno State -3.5 and is already up to Fresno State -7.

    Oh no, we suck again!

Based on performance, it’s hard not to up the line.

According to Yahoo Sports (-6.5) and USA Today (-7.0), the lines opened up right around where they are right now. Wouldnt be surprised to see it move to 8 or 9 later this week though. I’ll be there cheering for them Saturday, but I sure wouldnt put any do-ray-me on them at this point in time!

Well hopefully the Bruins bounce back and Vegas cleans up again as they did on the Tennessee game.

If vegas is so smart, why do the lines they set always change???

And why did the bookies select UCLA as the #6 or #7 team in the nation after week 1 or 2 last year?

BTW, who cares what the line on the game is? What value does it add?

  • CrouchingBruin

The line for the UCLA/Arizona game tripled, opening at Arizona -1, creeping up a half point each day, and ending up Arizona -3 by game time. Of course, in absolute terms, it was only two points, but that’s still a lot of movement on the line. A lot of heavy betting on Arizona last week, and now a lot of money going down on the Bulldogs.

The line changes as the volume of betting favors one team ot the other. Vegas bookies look to have the same amount bet on each team, and they collect the ‘vig’ or their ‘fee’ for running the book. So, if one team is getting all of the bets, the bookies change the line to entice the bettors to select the other team. As such, if the betting is heavier on the Bruins, the line will shrink. If it is heavier on the Bulldogs, the line will increase.

The value of the line? None, really, other than a straw poll of gamblers on the teams.

how vegas makes $ and how lines work are well documented and well understood.

but yet this myth persists that “vegas” is really smart about FB. BS.

the “line” is just a public opinion poll as u point out. and what does the public know about who’s gonna win and by how much? that’s right, nada.
