Answers (cont.), Part XXI
Hey, folks, I'm getting ready to head out to the Rose Bowl, but wanted to post the last set of answers. Thanks, again, for all the questions and the interest. It makes it enjoyable knowing this many people care. Here they are, set No. 21:
do you sense that RN and staff are getting frustrated with just how big this rebuilding job is? losing 59-0, recruiting going poorly, sc destroying ohio st., etc. How's the morale around the program right now
I don't think they are getting frustrated, but I believe they didn't realize how big the undertaking was until the loss. But the morale around the program is tremendous, and Neuheisel, to his credit, is the leader of keeping it high.
does RN have an area out of state that he really wants to target, like Dorrell did Louisiana? other than the state of washington. will we try to get back into texas like we once did
Yes, Texas is one of the areas Neuheisel wants to target. He also told me in the offseason he wants at least 70 percent of the players to come from SoCal, but wants to be a national player.
Neuheisel pimps the "relentlessly optimistic" mantra, but his demeanor, tone and messaage when the media record him is often anything but.
Do you think recruits and their families will see him as a hypocrite (ie, saying one thing, but doing the opposite)? He IS known as Slick Rick...maybe for a reason?
I find him to always be optimistic, sometimes to a point where I think he creates false expectations for the program this season. It is something I've spoken with him about, but actually beliefs all the stuff. I don't understand where you are getting that type of vibe from
What about the current players? Are they in danger of losing faith in Neuheisel's catchphrase, given that his behavior isn't "on the same page"? (haha! blast from the past...)
The players really enjoy Neuheisel because he is so refreshingly different than what preceded him. The players may not be very good, but practices are more fun, quicker paced and I believe the coaching, at least on offense, is better than they've received in a while.
The last time Mike Linn was the S&C coach for UCLA (1999...back when UCLA allegedly had some history/tradition), the Bruins were devastated by knee and ankle injuries.
And now, guess what?
That's right....UCLA is devastated by knee and ankle injuries.
UCLA has been having knee and ankle injuries for the six seasons I've covered the program. I don't think it is Mike Linn's doing. Maybe UCLA needs to look at other things, like the practice field, or ankle and knee braces, or toughness of player or anything else. I don't see it as a strength and conditioning issue right now.
What does Linn's regimen do to prevent said injuries?
Linn incorporates a lot of stretching into workouts. It is to increase flexibility.
