Answers, Part V
Here is the fifth set of answers:
in last weeks q&a, u mentioned something about covering the dodgers and that there was really horrible moral issues with some of them, or something like that. can you expound upon this?
I'll use this anecdote without using the player's name. I wrote a feature story on him, and mentioned he was married. When he saw the story, he was mad because if girls he knew in other cities saw he was married, it could hurt his ability to meet up with them when he went to their particular city.
i remember seeing some spike lee movie where he portrayed college basketball recruiting as people getting the recruits to parties and getting girls to ummm... "get together" with them. is spike at all accurate, to your knowledge, of college basketball or football recruiting? (that would be sad, these are just kids ya know)
I don't thin Spike Lee was far off in his portrayal of what takes place on some recruiting visits, but I do not think that happens for every player.
Has anybody asked Norm Chow how he would compare Craft to Leinart or Palmer? Obviously, it probably wouldn't be favorable, but I was wondering how he would describe the differences and if this would provide any glimmer of hope.
I actually touch on that notion in my preview story of Saturday's game, but as a quick snipet for you, Chow said it took Palmer a while for the offense to click, and that showed in USC's poor start in Chow's and Pete Carroll's first season at USC. That said, Craft doesn't have the physical tools of either Palmer or Leinart.
Would landing Josh Smith be a bigger win for the basketball program than landing Kevin Love was?
No, I don't think so. Love was so gifted in so many areas, he is the type of player that comes by once in a decade, or longer.
Why do you think we can't be consistently competitive for the Pac-10 title in football without changing our admissions standards, if we've been winning the Pac-10 lately in basketball under those same academic restrictions?
Numbers, numbers, numbers. There are far fewer players needed to turn around a basketball program than a football program. The talent pool is much smaller when it comes to football and academics than other schools are dealing with.
Do you ever read a question on here and say to yourself, "I bet I know which coach/recruit/staffer/booster/player/parent wrote this"?
Sometimes, but not often. Actually, I do know when a couple friends chime in with a question. So, hello.
Why does one of the best high school players in the country, Renardo Sidney, have only one offer? Is this guy incapable of even meeting the NCAA minimum academic requirements?
I believe you are onto something.
How long do you expect Howland to stay at UCLA? If he continues to do well, do you see anything luring him away, like the NBA or another school?
I think he will stay at UCLA until he feels burned out. I don't see the NBA calling because I see the NBA getting away from hiring college coaches to take over teams. It hasn't worked very well in the past.
Do you expect Brehaut to start as early as next season when he first becomes a Bruin?
I think there is a good chance he will start sometime during the 2009 season.
Given his relationship with Neuheisel, do you think Ken Norton is a shoo-in to replace DW some day?
I don't know what Neuheisel's relationship is with Norton, and I have no idea if he is a shoo-in for anything.

"When he saw the story, he was mad because if girls he knew in other cities saw he was married, it could hurt his ability to meet up with them when he went to their particular city."
Adrian Beltre? Carlos Perez? Gary Sheffield? I'll bet it was one of those three.
I think derek lowe
Again with the Renardo Sidney questions? I give up.
Derek Lowe wasn't a Dodger when Dohn covered them.
VB is giving up!! Awesome!! LOL
I heard Coach K interviewed about the difference in coaching the Olympic Team as compared with college. In college, it was about teaching; with the pros, he sat with them and asked their opinions about game plans and other stuff. I think it's a lot about styles, college compared to pro. Just as Pete Carroll was a flop in the NFL and does exceedingly well at the college level, I think Ben Howland's STYLE of coaching and play is FAR more suited to the college level than the pros. I think he'll be here, kind of as Brian says, til he retires
"I wrote a feature story on him, and mentioned he was married. When he saw the story, he was mad because if girls he knew in other cities saw he was married, it could hurt his ability to meet up with them when he went to their particular city."
ummm...girls like that don't read the paper. Esp on-line. And The Daily News, at that.
And they obviously think that google is something that guys do to them when they sashay by...cuz apparently they don't know how to check up on the background of the MLB player they're shtupping on the side.
That dood sounds like a seriously naive clown.
