Expectations?

| | Comments (35) |

Folks, I will have plenty of more stuff on the blog Sunday, but I was wondering what your expectations are for UCLA now that you've seen the good (Tennessee) and the bad (BYU)?

On some days you just don't have it, but will it get better as time goes on? A 500 season with all the injuries and young kids would be GREAT!

I expect another pac 10 championship and final four appearance with a chance at bringing home banner #12.

6-6.

Win most of our home games. Having said that, it's hard to see such a bipolar team win three straight home games.

Struggle on the road and pull one out at the end against UW.

same as at the beginning of the season, show improvement from week to week. didn't really happen this week but there are a heck of a lot more weeks to go.

I just expect not to see a 59-0 blowout. Until the offense can get it together, it's up to the defense to keep UCLA in games. That didn't happen today.

I still expect the team to improve, but at least we can stop talking about the top 25.

I can't pick a win total yet. I need to see how they bounce back next week.

Having watched the game, I'm amazed at their lack of talent. Their offensive line did not open any holes. They did an okay job of protecting Craft. I think it is due to scheme more than anything, but, Craft had a lot more time to throw than Cowan or Olson did in the last two years. I wanted to see more throwing to the backs out of the backfield. I was surprised how BYU took the wind out of UCLA's sails so easily. The successive first quarter turn overs killed us. BYU did a great job game-planning for UCLA and taking away everything UCLA wanted to do offensively. I was amazed at Craft's lack of arm strength, how he locked on to receivers constantly and how inaccurate he was (a number of the passes he completed were off target so the receivers had to break off their routes to catch the balls). I also watched Olson live against Utah last year (yes, I've been blessed to have watched both of UCLA's debacles in the last two years) and he looked the defense off much more than Craft did today. I don't think UCLA is as bad as they looked today, and I don't think they were as good as we saw two weeks ago. I think they are somewhere in between. It will be a VERY successful season if we end up bowl eligible. In my opinion, the only chance we have to win a game is to have Olson play - and it will still be extremely difficult. Craft just didn't cut it.

I expect Ucla to try its hardest to go 1-0 next week.

and I expect for school to start next week and for the education to continue...

I expect this gibberish to be explained:

"We are going to test relentlessly positive, just as we knew it would be."

what does this mean? was Neu speaking english @ the time, or was he having a "speaking in tongues" moment? when in rome....

I expect them to improve most weeks. Of course, thats easy this week. No where to go but up after today's BYU debacle. I'm just happy it happened on the road where I didnt have to see it (lucky me, had to work). It will be interesting to see how they react this coming week. "Relentlessly positive" is going to be put to the ultimate test!

But I will be at the Rose Bowl early next Saturday, as usual. However, I will probably have a few more cold ones than usual... just in case :-)

I expect some surprise outcomes in the games, but more importantly for recruiting to pick up and for the coaches to stick around for next year.

When you have had a different staff every 12 months, it's insane to expect consistency out of the players when the leadership has not been consistent.

This gradual improvement idea is interesting. I would say it's valid if the players can stay healthy enough to gain experience, but if you have a different group of young inexperienced players out there every week, then the development can be painful to watch and slow.

Regardless, this is the team I support, so I'll be out there next week at the Rose Bowl hoping for a victory against AZ.

Go Bruins!

Tony said:

I really can't accept this magnitude of ineptitutude, considering the football IQ of this staff.
Plain Unacceptable

It is a long season and there will be ups and downs. Keep fighting and working hard! Go Bruins!

Yeah losing 59-0 to a team with half the athleticism in personnel as UCLA does will really help with recruiting! NewHysall and Co. got "wood-shedded" tonight as they say down south......Side note, Trojans put up 35 on OSU so I say D Walkers "D" allows unrestricted access to the endzone and SC wins by 60

We ran into a BYU team with a chip on their shoulder today. They were ticked off over not getting credit in the Washington game and seemed hellbent to prove their worth against us. I thought if we could withstand their initial emotional charge, we might be ok, but alas, not to be. The way they played to start the game, I think they could have hanged with the best. Anyway, all is not lost, let's see if this coaching staff can regroup the team and put up a fight in conference play. At least we get Fresno State at home, and with college ball, you never know.

ABC was giving the score and saying that the it was the worse loss UCLA has had since 1925. I heard on KNB 1070 in the car that it was the worse loss since losing to USC in 1930 (52 to 0). I still support Neuheisel and will continue to.

Meant to write KNX 1070 AM radio and not KNB in my earlier post above!

It seems (based on the following article) that ABC and KNX both had it wrong:

WOW. i seriously changed the channel every 4 minutes. i could not bear to watch.

in any case, my expectations (which i'll admit are still mixed with a little bit of hope) are:
a win vs either arizona or fresno
a win vs wash st and a close win vs wash
1 close win out of stanford and oregon state
and i really hope we pull an upset out of cal, oregon, and arizona state maybe if somebody is missing their qb or something to get bowl eligible
play hard for a quarter vs usc then get destroyed
and the bowl game would be a toss up

and such is my formula for a successful year.

JB said:

Expectations? Over here, they mostly consist of getting the guys in the trenches experience while recruiting a game breaker or 2 this offseason. SC, Florida, etc have multiple guys who can take it to the house if given any kind of crease...don't see anybody with that in true blue. Around .500 and not getting completely embarassed by SC would be nice.

Despite this massacre, I am still on the 9-4 ship. Although I do hear someone screaming iceberg ahead. Can Neuheisel steer this ship away from the iceberg? We're about to find out.

I have to come back and say that after kidding Brian in the comments about his pessimistic projection after our Tenn. win that he was dead on and I would agree that a bowl game this season would be a huge success (so I predict 4 or 5 wins with 6 being about our ceiling)

Joe said:

The good news is that UA, ASU, Stanford, WSU, UW, and OSU all suck. Oregon down to their 3rd string QB. Cal is beatable. We get Fresno at home.

I still see 6-6.

Expectations? Well, I sure didnt expect this! We all should realize that these are Dorrells players. Not talented enough to play against the good teams in the country. I've finally come to realize that UCLA is a basketball school and will never be a contender in football unless the entrance requirements for athletes is lowered. If not, that's fine. Let's just not expect big things from this program. It's like UCLA is a division 2 program that plays rugged out of conference schedules and gets pounded. Yeah, the Tenn. win was won on pure emotion and Tenn. mistakes. Now we know what kind of team the BRUINS bring to the field...not a very good one. I'd be very surprise if UCLA win 2 more games this year. It is not coaching, it's talent! And all the bull I've heard that's it's not different than Dorrell. Well, it's still Dorrell's team. No preparation from UCLA could have beat this BYU team. Talent wins football games,so UCLA wins very few. I'll still be watching my BRUINS here in Louisiana, looking for a few more miracles.

I'll attempt to explain this "gibberish" as you describe it.

"We are going to test relentlessly positive, just as we knew it would be."

means:

"We are going to test 'relentlessly positive', just as we knew it would be (tested)."

Joe said:

"Relentlessy positive" is RN's theme/goal for the year. So he's saying that goal is now going to be tested.

Apparently you misunderstood this for gibberish because you're either stupid or just not paying attention.

Glad to help.

"Systematic annual holocaust of the remaining Dorrell players."

I am speechless. I guess VB is getting to the RB early to fire up his "gas oven."

VB said:

The "gas oven" you are eluding could also be rendered as "graduation." Get rid of all these heartless players. Only a few on the team actually have the will to win.

Sam Gilbert Author Profile Page said:

Yeah! It's Dorrell's fault!

I mean geez, with all the time he spends with him at practice and talking to them during team meetings! How can they not be inspired and better prepared?! The college game is all about coaching, so let's blame Dorell! He's the head coach!

...wait.

what a rude awakening from last week! I expect a below 500 performance for this team, maybe after next year we can find a decent kid with a good arm, and a tough O-line to give them a fighting chance. SC will decimate us, but at least we had 13-9. good luck recruiting.

SigBruin said:

Well the fact of the matter is that a loss is a loss. Whether we lost by 1 or 59 it still goes down in the books a one under L, next game starts at 0-0 and we can't carry that luckluster performance over to the Az game. Let's just hope BYU runs that table and legitimizes this loss, so to speak. We need to move on and as RN was saying its a long season. That said, I don't think our prospects are looking up, especially with all the injuries. Make a bowl this year and this season will be a win. Neihesiel wasn't brought on to win this year, he's here to change the nature of UCLA football, and change takes time.

Face it....Tennessee didn't make any adjustments, didn't run the ball as they should have, and played soft defense in the second half. UCLA didn't win that game...Tennesse lost that game. CRN says punting is winning...really, I thought putting up some points is winning. Any team that has a decent quarterback will be UCLA. Beware of UA...if I remember correctly, Tuitama beat UCLA in his freshman year...didn't UA put up 50 something points?!

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
