Why would he come here? He probably used the offer letter a scratch paper for his math homework.
"He has offers from a bunch of schools, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon and Nebraska."
So what you're saying is he won't be attending UCLA?
Hell, he'd take a scholarship from Prairie View A&M before he'd take a scholarship from UCLA. We are the school that begs opposing fans to come to our games.
I think he won't come here because he can read how the "most loyal" fans (read VB) trash the program.
The program does that to itself. We are posting newspaper and radio ads in the central valley begging Fresno State fans to come to the game to "Say they were there to watch them beat the Bruins."
Save the VB bashing. I speak the truth. Stop being so sensitive. Our program is currently the joke of the nation. It all started with that premature "MONOPOLY" ad. Now these current ads. Ladies doing cross-word puzzles during the game. The mass 3rd quarter exodus of the fairweather. The BORING team entrance from the tunnel. The comatose alumni and old-timer Geoff in his short shorts.
WE NEED A REVIVAL IN OUR FOOTBALL CULTURE. THIS IS A JOKE!!!!!!
VB,
Maybe it's time you grab the funny hat and cowbell and start leading the cheers. What's worse, the crossword puzzle lady in front of you or the lady who's always knitting in front of me?
Or how about the ladies who cover their ears when my family and I yell on defensive downs?
How about the old crotchedy man behind me that tells me to sit down when an exciting play happens?
What about the ladies wearing cardigans around their necks last week in 90 degree weather, and then leaving at the beginning of the 4th quarter?
What about the dude who reads his novel during timeouts and halftime?
What about that chick behind me that spilt her soda all over the ground so I had to stand in a puddle of Coke for 3 hours?
AND WORST OF ALL: What about the entire stadium that stands up the entire HALFTIME to "stretch," but then cement their butts to their seats when the game is being played?
... but I still come back for more every week!! Gotta love it!
Now, I'm upset!
First the "monopoly ad." STRIKE ONE
Then, the "fire sale" at $10.00. STRIKE TWO
Now, we place ads to get OPPOSING fans. STRIKE THREE!
Time to turnover the marketing staff. Geez! Could it get any worse?
VB is right. THIS IS A JOKE!
Sorry VB but OUR program is not the joke of the nation. There are plenty of other school's out there that are worse off than we are. Remember this day because when we get better and start competing for the pac 10 you will feel silly. Don't become a fair weather fan yourself please.
Now, moving on the the 'fans' in the stands.
UCLA has always had anemic fans -- even in the good times. The motto: "Come Late, Leave Early, Be Quiet as a Church Mouse." They knit, they do crosswords, they chit chat about creative memory projects. They sit the ENTIRE game, except for half time when they stretch to get circulation back in their legs. Instead, they should stretch on EVERY DEFENSIVE THIRD DOWN.
During last week's game, the UBTA clan of 8 was engaged in our usual 'noisemaking' on EVERY defensive down (not just 3rd). You should have seen the look on the rest of the fans faces -- it was like we were disturbing a Billy Graham sermon!
"Don't ask me to sit down."
"Don't ask me to shut up"
"Don't ask me to be nice"
"THIS IS FOOTBALL !!!"
Dan B: You don't have to worry about UB, VB or the rest of us becoming fairweather fans. I've been a Bruin loyalist since I graduated in 1979, and VB (my son) has been brought up appropriately. I pay my annual donation to the Wooden Athletic Fund, buy my seats and arrive early to tailgate, stay to the last tick of the clock, and lose my voice EVERY game, not matter the score.
It is frustrating, however, to see how our fan base acts compared to other schools. I've been to plenty of D1 games and (as I am sure Dohn can attest to) Bruin fans are anemic!
VB,
Have you been to Pauley recently? One of the best teams in the nation with 3 straight final fours under their belt and the lower level fans are so comatose it's sickening. I think I'm the only one outside of the student section without gray hair. It's so sad that the student section has to yell "Stand up!" to the rest of the fans - even during conference games.
Unfortunately this is the culture at UCLA that die-hard fans will always have to live with. Remember last year before Dorrell was axed all the posts supporting him that read like this: "KD is graduating players and they're staying out of trouble, blah, blah blah". For most of the UCLA fan base it's never about winning.
I was at the Las Vegas Bowl when it was 40 degrees at kickoff and rapidly getting colder. There were about 40,000 BYU fans and about 2000 UCLA fans. But those were the best 2000 UCLA fans I'd ever been around. Pathetic that a school that produces thousands of alumni each year has such a fair weather fan base.
Alas VB, although me and 1998 other fans are with you, you're fighting a losing battle.
-Section 16, Row 36.
id like to know we VB and UB sit. Maybe i can find a bruinfan selling their tickets in that section.
how the tides have turned...last month before the season the "monopoly ad" was as VB said "Nevertheless, I do think the ad is pretty sweet. At least our school is taking pride in the football program once again." and mostly everyone loved it.
Now that the teams 1-2(10pts last 2 games) everyone is hating the Marketing department and pointing fingers where ever they can..Blaming Dorrell.Admission meeds to loose up...Hire Scott Back..LOL.

Tunnel 19, Row 72. You CAN'T miss us!
VB save the negativity for somewhere else. This is a place to support the bruins, not bash them. Go Bruins
It is not likely that the coaching staff would offer a player that they had absolutley no chance to land.
If he wants to go to a top notch, happening school with a great coaching staff and a program that has no where to go but up, and it will go up, how could he top UCLA?
Absolutely McNown! VB and UB's negative tones wear on us. The father son combo explains so much. What's the saying...the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree?
Andy,
actually, the coaching staff offers LOTS of players they have absolutely no chance to land. i'm not saying that is the case here, but it happens every year in every sport.
Have any of you folks out there ever even heard of the fan Code of Conduct that is out there ... read VB and UB. If you're standing up ... and KEEP standing ...when nobody around you is standing, you are interfering with the view of the fans behind you. Nobody is saying you can't stand up and cheer, just be respectful of the fans around you.
Saxylady,
You'll have a much clearer view of the game at home watching on TV. The fact that you would take time out to defend those that sit on their hands all game shows how you're part of the problem and why our marketing dept has to go looking elsewhere to find fans with some passion.
Keep standing VB, UB, et al.
Sincerely,
A dedicated 'stander' in Section 16 Row 36.
I harken back to the Cade Mcknown years when things were exciting at the Rose Bowl. I do not care what team you cheer for, nothing kills a fans spirit more than UNWATCHABLE FOOTBALL which is what we have endured at the Rose Bowl for the better part of a decade. 13-9 was the last time there was real excitement there. I too was at the Vegas Bowl as well as the Emerald Frickin Nut Bowl a year earlier supporting a below average football team. Most fans are Fair Weather and lkets face it we have sucked for years now. Winning will be the only thing that changes the atmosphere at the RB.
Section 16 row 10
(*My kids are the ones that had their faces and hair painted blue and gold in the 1st row?
Anonymous,
I am at every game in Section 17 and I am not defending those who sit on their hands. But people who stand up and block the view of people around them CONTINUOUSLY are not being considerate. Just because someone does not stand up for the entire game does not mean they are not a fan. I will cheer as much as the next person when something happens, but I do not appreciate fans who do not have consideration for others.
