Revenge wanted

| | Comments (48) |

Here is the notebook I wrote in today's paper about UCLA linebacker Reggie Carter seeking revenge for last year's loss to BYU in the Las Vegas bowl.
And here is what Carter had to say in regards to BYU defeating Washington on Saturday in a controversial finish in which the Huskies had a last-second extra point blocked.
"It's a Pac-10 school and Washington fought real hard,'' Carter said. "I was pulling for them, but I'm kind of happy BYU won. I'm happy they still have their win streak going, and I'm looking forward to trying to break that. But I'm looking forward going into that, and they're ranked (No. 18) in the nation and we're underdogs and all that. Ya' know, that adds a little frosting to the cake."

I'm glad our team is out for revenge. I can't stand BYU or their fans. So arrogant and cocky. I hope we KILL them.

Dohn, are you traveling to Provo? Or are you gonna watch it on TV?

Brian Dohn Author Profile Page said:

I go to all the games.

VB said:

Lucky. What is your per diem?

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

Yeah Brian. And what's your SSN? How many exemptions do you claim on your W2? What was your taxable income?

Brian Dohn Author Profile Page said:

Also, my favorite color is purple, I like to eat between 2.6667766 and 3.998273 meals per day and don't mind sneezing four times a day, but anything above six concerns me.

I sense the sarcasm. Point taken. Just making "bored at work" chit chat. I happen to find your job interesting.

Finally, a substantive conversation on the issues that all Bruin fans really care about. I can hardly wait to hear about your mileage reimbursement and clothes allowance. Also, please let Bruin fans know how your annual bonus is calculated. Do you get a bigger bonus if the Bruins do well and you have to cover bowl games or the NCAA tournament, if you write more than the required number of feature articles, if you make appearances on TV and radio or if blog hits increase?

VB said:

pfffff... Sorry I brought it up. It seems as though VB can't say anything nowadays without getting scourged.

My mileage reimubursement is $0.585 per mile.

Fan4Life Author Profile Page said:

Brian, do you know if Walker and Chow are traveling with the team to Provo as well or are they going to call the game from home while listening on the radio?

Thanks

VB said:

Wow... Was my question THAT stupid? Collin Cowherd on ESPN is very open about his lowsy per diem at ESPN. I figured Dohn wouldn't mind sharing some information.

VB,

I like you. I'm just giving you a hard time out of fun. I needed a laugh today, and this did the trick. Thanks for being a good sport.

VB said:

LOL.. No worries. If I can dish it, I can certainly take it.

do they let the fans rush on the field after a game at provo?

VB said:

Sadly enough, I think every school, with the exception of UCLA, allows fans to rush the field after victories.

I swear, one game, I'm gonna just do it. You'll see VB on the news being arrested and constrained by the guys in the yellow jackets.

i dont think they will show it on the news, they never show the good stuff!

VB--Dozens of Pasadena's finest were on the field before the end of the Tenn game and these were big men. I would advise against trying to rush the field as they and their "Event Staff" pals would probably pummel you. Ouch! Then who would we have to entertain us on this blog??

VB said:

Glad I entertain you guys like a stringed puppet.

And that sexual reference to BD and I is uncalled for and childish at best. Dohn and I are pals, and nothing more. I am a happily married man (to a woman no less).

StillHatesMichaelFey said:

espn did some big article a few years back about who should be able to rush the field/court and in what situations. i assume it was a page 2 article. if i remember correctly you basically had to be a small program upending a giant. or possibly a medium sized program winning a championship. i do remember that we were given special recognition as one of the programs who are never allowed to rush the court under any condition whatsoever, because based on our history of success we should know how to act in those situations.

Back to the subject of BYU, I attended a game for the first time in Provo a couple of years ago and liked the experience. The Cougars got up on a highly-favored SC team and were really into the game until it suddenly turned on them. But they stayed until the end and were good sports about losing to a superior team.

And BYU did something I will always recall. Before the game started the announcer said something to the effect as follows: "And let us all not forget that these young men have made large sacrifices and take risks on the playing field for our entertainment and enjoyment. Let us remember this and pray for their safe-keeping."

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

They're really not sacrificing a heck of a lot- they're playing a game and doing so because they want to.

Sure there are elements of danger but I guess I am making sacrifices every day when I get in my car and drive on the freeway.

Let's take this for what it is- a religious school's effort to evangelize. Good for them. Glad you got to go to Provo though. Glad you were touched.

Now let's get back to poking fun at VB...

UB (Ultimate Bruin) Author Profile Page said:

1. I hope our FG kicking unit picks up every block at the end of the BYU game. We don't want a repeat of the blocked FG last year --- or Washington's fizzle last week.

2. If we (the "D") can hold Max in check, it should be a good game on Saturday. I look forward to see what improvement the offense makes having 2 weeks more of practice. (I am assuming there WILL be improvement. Unlike the Dorrell era, I beleive the new coaching staff will actually build upon each week.)

3. I am all for revenge -- or anything else that motivates the team to play to their potential. With all the talk this week about the trend of let downs after big wins, I hope it gets broken this Saturday.

4. VB, BD's per diem is the joy he gets from reading the articulate missives on his blog. In fact, I'll bet he kicks in some of his salary to the IT department that keeps his blog up and running.

5. To all the tools that rag on VB (my son, BTW), he has you right where he wants you. He posts and prods to get you all riled up... and you get all riled up. I don't get to blog as much as I would like to, so once in a while he'll email me the responses with a big "LOL" in the subject line.

6. PB (my nephew and VB's cousin, BTW), we all need the white jackets now and again.

7. VB/PB : BruinGirl? Could this be GatorGirl in disguise?

GO BRUINS!

Everyone has a right to say what they want to say but apparently your son likes to get people "riled up" for his own enjoyment even though he could otherwise express his views without being mean and negative?

What does this accomplish? Why is it fun and entertaining to be mean?

It seems like he really wants to be accepted here- he likes to tell people where his seats are and where he is bbq-ing...so it is a bit of a contradiction.

He really wants to be a part of the crowd but he is going about it all wrong...let people in on the joke and you might get better reception.

Are his actions a defense mechanism for the inevitable disappointment that comes along with people not wanting to hang out with him?

Perhaps a better solution would be to express your opinions more diplomatically instead of setting yourself up for failure.

Good luck!

VB said:

Haha. Plenty of people love to hang out with me, BruinFBBB. Thanks for your concern, but VB does fine in the friends department. I have a beautiful wife and beautiful life. Sorry you can't say the same.

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

There goes the main point flying right over VB's head. Can't say I'm surprised, Straw Man...

VB said:

I like to antagonize. It is in my nature. What is the point of sitting on a blog if you aren't going to have a little fun? Plus, most of the things I say are brutally honest anyway. It's not like I'm spewing out hyperbolic lies and predictions. Grow a sack, BruinFBBB. You sound like a whiny little girl.

Fine, I'll simmer down to make you feel more comfortable, old man. I guess being a 22 year old married with a full-time job makes me less of an adult. Geez Louise!!

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

The point is what you do is sophomoric and easy. Try bringing something articulate and intelligent to the table once in a while. You might like it...

Your eighth-grade playground style was fun...in 8th grade...

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

I'm not saying you shouldn't have fun. Knock yourself out.

But you don't have to go Beavis and Butt-head all day long. Mix in something more clever...

VB said:

Okay, I didn't realize it offended you so much. Dohn doesn't seem to care. He let's these thread grow infinitely with posts from sensitive dudes like you.

VB said:

ALL I DID EARLIER WAS ASK DOHN WHAT HIS PER DIEM WAS!

How is that being "Beavis and Butthead?"

HomeBru said:

Freezing my butt off and having BYU fans yell stuff at me doesn't make for a great Vegas trip, but it was kind of funny seeing all of the mormon fans looking totally out of place in the casinos. Revenge in their house would be awesome.

Also, I know some students got pepper sprayed trying to rush the field after the SC win. I think streaking might be a better idea because they just tackle you and arrest you. It also hasn't happened at the Rose Bowl in a while.

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

I'm not being sensitive. I am acting like an adult. And part of being an adult is guiding younglings like yourself to higher standards if I have the chance...

Dohn would much rather the conduct of posters to his blog resemble that of adults and not 8th-graders. Ask him.

He may like you but that doesn't mean he wouldn't rather you grow up a little. But that is just the impression I get- I won't speak for him anymore.

My B&B comment was directed not directed specifically towards the sentiments you expressed at the top of this thread but rather your overall presence here.

bruinoc Author Profile Page said:

VB - you get .585? Really?

On another note, since UB (Ultimate Bruin) is your father, what does VB stand for? Just curious.

I'm just going to add to the discussion today that I agree with the sentiment of most of VB's posts, but must also agree with BruinFBBB that VB's tone sometimes comes across a bit harsh and seemingly unnecessary.

On the other hand, the young man is clearly insightful and honest in his assessment of his team. He has a passion for his team, I respect that greatly. Imagine the effect it might have if more of the UCLA fanbase was so energized and unwilling to accept poor performance?

Peace!

VB stands for "Video Bruin." The reason I am known as Video Bruin is because I enjoy making videos throughout the season of tailgate and such. I also own and operate my own wedding videography business on the side. Here is the link to my Youtube if you wanna see some videos. I willl have some from this season up in a week or so. (www.youtube.com/charlesva2004)

There are 8 Bruins in our tailgate clan.

OB - Oldest Bruin (UB's brother; PB's father; VB's uncle)
UB - Ultimate Bruin (VB's father)
EB - Emotional Bruin (UB's wife)
PB - Prodigal Bruin (VB and JB's cousin)

They aren't making sacrifices? Do you any idea the amount of dedication, time, energy, blood, sweat and tears that is required to play Div 1 football? You make it sound like they're just falling out of bed and show up on Saturdays. I suggest you follow one for a week in season and off season, then come back and tell us they are not making sacrifices.

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

You're kidding right?

Just b/c they spend a lot of time doing it doesn't mean its a sacrifice.

A sacrifice would be giving up football (something they like doing) in order to take care of an ailing family member or to work and put food on the table..

Hope this helps...

BradleyBruin Author Profile Page said:

It appears you don't have any idea what they already have to sacrifice in order to play Div 1 football. Yes, it's different than volunteering with World Vision or the Peace Corp, but you make it sound like they just have to fall out of bed. In reality, a lot of them play in order to put food on the table or to help an ailing relative. They're already making lots of sacrifices.

Ah man, this is one of the most HILARIOUS series of comments that I've read in a long, long time. I was rolling reading the whole per diem thing. You guys are a good bunch with a great sense of humor. Thanks for the good laughs today!

la-ukla Author Profile Page said:

I'm with BruinFBBB and think that it's kind of exaggerated to say that the players are making "large sacrifices" in order to play football. To me, a large sacrifice is a man or woman serving his/her country, facing the daily possibility of death or dismemberment, separated from loved ones for months at a time. These guys are playing football for god's sake!

BradleyBruin Author Profile Page said:

BruinFBBB said "I am making sacrifices every day when I get in my car and drive on the freeway" and is claiming that's equivalent to the sacrifices that UCLA football players make. I guess neither of you have ever played the sport (or possibly even watched a practice), so we'll have to leave it at that. How about the per diem topic? Either of you have any experience with that?
