Today's stuff

Steve Dilbeck wrote a column of optimism for UCLA' fans today, although with a decidedly different tact, and here is the notebook I wrote, which talks about possible defensive changes.

I'd rather dunk my head in a rusty toilet than root for USC. Nice try, Dilibeck. The Rose Bowl is not obligated to take a Pac10 team if USC goes to the NC. Stupid article.

What kind of junk is Dilbeck writing about??Come on.. rooting for $UC... makes me sick.. oh wait still stick from Saturday....

Dilbeck did have a point. This year USC is in a league by themselves without any other team looking like they can play with them. They don't need anyone to cheer them on. So if that's the reality, then there's some mild interest in who in the Pac-9 will go to the Rose Bowl this year. All the teams not in the state of Oregon lost this week but the Ducks lost their quarterback and underwhelming OSU beat Colt-Brenner-less Hawaii. On any given Saturday this bunch has the ability to lose to anybody.

That article written by a dim-witted Baboon with a keyboard.

To Lloyd Lake -

Baboons everywhere are offended by your comment. To say Dilbeck is a moron is overly generous. Even when a $c win would directly benefit UCLA I wouldn't root for them to win, only hope for an ugly tie.

ONLYTHETRUTH Author Profile Page said:

He could have spared the sarcasm i.e. maybe the bruins can get their running average up to 1 yard per carry this Saturday.

And it is never wise to get in the middle of the SC-ucla fray, a loathing "relationship" that has been ongoing for decades now, and passed down from generation to generation. Most of the posters have been tattooed with this brainwashing (although in real time it is all pretty silly, really)

And the only way I could envision bruins holding up the SC V-sign is if they slowly peal away the index finger from the middle finger.

HomeBru said:

I waive my index and middle finger to the beat of conquest every time we play them. I just happen to do it with a dollar bill stuffed in between.

Sid said:

I never actually found where he explained how cheering on U$C is good for UCLA. Is he trying to imply that cheering on a good team will make us feel some sort of catharsis for being UCLA fans? Is he implying we would feel a "Oh darn, UCLA lost, but hey, U$C won again and that makes me feel slightly better because I'm now also a U$C fan!!". It's not like U$C doing well will help the Pac-10 as a whole in any way. The entire sports world already knows the Pac-10, as far as football goes is U$C, then everybody else. U$C being successful only furthers this notion and creates an even greater disparity.

I say to hell with this. Did Red Sox fans, previously doomed to never win a World Series ever in their abysmal history ever say to themselves "Hey, those Yankees are a solid franchise who win championships for the American League all the time, maybe I should be fans of them in the greater effort to support my League! Also, now I'LL get to be the one bragging about how awesome my team is doing!!" I THINK NOT!

School/team loyalties run deeper than merely who is doing better at the current time in history. The Trojans are on top of the mountain now, but all good things come to an end in time. Rest assured, history repeats itself, the Fall of Troy is inevitable.

An interesting stat for all the Bruin fans who out there right now thinking, "Everyone should remember Pete Carroll lost his first year too."

Ricky lost by 59 points to BYU. If you add up the total margins of defeat in all Pete Carroll losses at USC, it comes out to 59. Amazing.

I hope UCLA breaks up that football monopoly going on in the State of Utah someday.

Ri-L Author Profile Page said:

What a ridiculous article. Nobody is playing for second - the Rose Bowl can choose whoever they want if they lose the Pac-10 number one. See who played in the 2005 Rose Bowl?

If the rest of the Pac-10 is as bad as Dilbeck says, there's no way the RB committee would pick the number two team. We'll be seeing Florida or Georgia way before that.

In addition - I'm not going to jump on someone else's bandwagon. USC already had too many of those. Just wait a couple of years when the wheels come off that bus, and see how many ex-USC fans there are. I sure don't remember there were too many "true" SC fans in the 90's when we were stomping them. They just come out of the woodwork like cockroaches when they do well.

Zippy said:

I could care less about USC right now.

BYU is in the past and focus should be 100% on Arizona - IMO, the jury is still very out on these Bruins and we find out just what kind of team we have this Saturday based on how UCLA is able to bounce back.

ONLYTHETRUTH Author Profile Page said:

Interesting topic. Another thought:

For nearly 50-years Los Angeles has had an incredible run of national championships from SC football and ucla basketball. And yet for the dye-in-the-wool Trojan or bruin fans there has been no cross-over, no enjoyment in the other's success. Too bad, our loss, because there is nothing more exciting in all of sports than winning a collegiate national championship.

And since success begets success, SC football and ucla basketball adversely affect the other because the respective schools get the best talent.

Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side. You have failed, your highness. I am a Jedi like my father before me.

brewnz Author Profile Page said:

Dilweed has got to be kidding. He does realize that these are not only two competing football and basketball programs, but also two competing Universities, right? He actually thinks either side would ever root for its rival? Really?

Thanks for trying to stir the pot, Steve, but I'll stick with my 0-59 shutout Bruins throughout the season and reap whatever consequences are earned by this team. There is no honor in hoping they can back into a bowl game. Actually, despite the Pac 9's weakness, there still is no guarantee that '$C won't lose a game. Maybe OSU really was only as good as Youngstown and Ohio U.

If ONLYTHEFALSE actually went to either one of these institutions then perhaps he'd be able to comprehend why rooting for the other is not an option.

Exactly FBBB - TRUTH clearly has no dog in the fight, although he does have a firm grasp on how to be a frontrunner! So, he's got that going for him, which is nice...

ProdigalBruin Author Profile Page said:

It seems that Dilbeck has taken a page our of VB's book. Clearly, he is making this silly suggestion in order to get Bruin Fans all fired up. Just as it has worked for VB, it has worked for Dilbeck. I assure you that Dilbeck is sitting back with his feet on his desk laughing at all of the Bruin fans whipped up into a lather.

For my part, I agree with most of what was said above. However, I would much rather watch SUC win every game and be rolling along towards thier inevitable BCS Title game only to be beat by the Bruins in December (i.e. 13-9), spoling another NC shot, ruining another SUCky season, sending them to the Rose Bowl.

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

Yes, I'm sure VB and DB are both very proud of themselves...but what do their actions say about them?

Dilbeck's agenda is clear. He wants folks to read his crappy articles and he isn't good enough at his job to get attention without resorting to cheap gimmicks.

Similar ideas apply to VB- he wants attention. Fine. I understand his wanted to "rile up" BYU fans on an anonymous message board- as pathetic as it is I understand where he is coming from.

But wanting to "rile up" one's own fans? Like Dilbeck...it reeks of a guy that wants attention but doesn't have anything useful for or insightful to say...

Perhaps you might think of a suitable counter-argument rather than resorting to name-calling next time?

You might get some of that respect you've been crying out for lately that way...

This topic has taken on a life of its own. One final thought:

I left at halftime of the SC-OSU game because of the lack of drama. As stated before, a competitive SC-ucla rivalry is better entertainment and better for recruiting for both schools.

That said, if some of us were not such die-hards then bruins would have missed out on the vicarious fun of Texas over SC 2005, Oregon State over SC 2006 and Stanford beating SC 2007.

And Trojans would have been deprived of Miami costing ucla a national championship in 1998, and the last three Final-4s with the bruins doing a Buffalo Bills imitation.

SUC-UGLA. Nothing quite like it.

BruinFBBB Author Profile Page said:

I'll keep mentioning it as long as you keep acting like one but I'd much rather you grow up. But more name-calling, really?

I can see I've ruffled your feathers so I'll take a break.

Enjoy your day!

At least ONLYTHEFALSE admits he likes drama...even though he left one of the biggest games of the year (for his team) at the half...

Root for $UC? Root for $UC? Not even if it meant saving the lives of tens of thousands. Not if it meant my left family jewel. Not if it meant the eradication of radical Islamic terrorists. Not for all the $$ in the world.

First, his logic doesn't make sense. As he now knows, the RB Committee is not obligated to take the P-10 #2.

Second, even if the RB Cmtee was so bound, the chances that UCLA would breeze through the P10 with only a loss to $UC is about as remote as Dillweed, er, Dillbeck winning 9 swimming Golds in London 2012, all with new WRs, edging out Phelps in each race.

As I always like to say: "SUC (sic) in se malum est."
(For those of you Latin impaired, it loosely translates to SUC is inherently evil.)

Subject: LA Daily News: DILBECK: Want to be successful, UCLA? Root for the cardinal (and gold) rule

Really?

This is what your career is about? It somehow makes sense to offend an entire fanbase with essentially heretical nonsense? And just to get a rise out of us? Just to get a handful more hits on your article?

Your article reeks of cheap journalism and I hope that it wasn't intended to convey the utter lack of respect for UCLA fans that most perceived from it. UCLA isn't a top tier football program, has little history as such, and probably won't have a future as such either. We get it. Believe me when I say that many UCLA fans know this better than you do.

But give us a break, and the next time your deadline is approaching and you don't have any real news to write about, choose a different target.

Just to complete the story, here is what I responded with.

"Perhaps I am taking life too seriously, but that doesn't change the fact that you took the easy road to fill words on a page at the expense of people who take pride in the sports programs of their alma mater - even days after such a crushing loss.

You can say what you want about what you intended or otherwise, but the fact of the matter is that your article was belittling to UCLA fans.

And 'Nameless one?' Am I some random child on the street? The name is Patrick - but you can continue with your condescending tone (which seems to be your writing style) and call me whatever you like. I guess when you can't defend your own writing you can always go on the offensive and start name calling..."
