Answers, Part XXI

Here is the 21st set:

How long do you think Dwayne Walker and Norm Chow will stay at UCLA if the next few seasons continue like this one?
If the next few seasons continue like this one, I don’t think they will have the opportunity to stick around. The idea is for this program to get better, and by 2010 it should be better.

what’s your assessment on Tyler Honeycutt as an overall bball player. He looks extremely thin and weak in his footage?
He needs to get stronger, but he is very skilled and can shoot the ball. I think he is the kind of player UCLA has lacked for a few years because his size and skill creates matchup problems on the perimeter for other teams.

How much playing time do you think J’mison will get this year in comparision to Aboya. Also, is he more of a scoring threat than Aboya is?
I think they will get about equal playing time, and I think, at this point, Aboya is more of a scoring threat. I know Aboya can make the elbow jumper a few times a game. I’m not sure if Morgan can.

Do you expect our frontcourt to be a weakness by end of the season? Will we have any scoring from the forwards?
I don’t know if it will be a weakness, but I don’t see it as a strength. There isn’t a gifted scorer there, and James Keefe will be asked to play the role Luc Richard Mbah a Moute played the last three seasons. I think there will be scoring, but most of it will come either via the break, offensive rebounds or pick and rolls.

What’s going on with recruiting? We only have 7 guys committed. Where are the skilled guys at receiver and more guys on the offensive line? I believe we’ll have a good 12-15 committed but at this point it looks dire. What’s going on? Does Neuheisel have it under control?
The commitments aren’t coming because UCLA took its time evaluating players and sending out offers, and didn’t try to pressure kids. The staff is looking hard, very hard, at offensive linemen in high school and also the junior college ranks. If it gets to be January and UCLA has 10 commitments, than I think it is time for some serious worrying.

I believe Chow will stay for a few years. With that said, does UCLA have 500k to pay Chow after the three years, a decent salary for a coordinator. Or will they not be able to afford him after the Titans are done paying?
In the third year of his contract at UCLA, the school will owe him $640,000. Unless UCLA increases how much it is paying its assistants, there will be an issue unless other assistants start making a lot less.

Someone at last week’s game mentioned that our line splits were very narrow, indicating our O-line play is weak. Can you comment on this? How wide are the line splits for talented O-lines?
The splits are based a lot of athleticism and ability. If the splits are wider, it means the linemen can move very well. And the wider the splits, the better the offensive line, in most cases.

Who’s the fastest player on the team?
Probably Tony Dye.

Is Reggie Carter as fast / quick this year as he was last year?
I don’t know, but he looks to be playing ok to me.

Did the run blocking get worse last week or did WSU’s defensive scheme limit the running success?
Wazzu stuffed the box with eight and nine defenders, which made it tough to run.

Doesn’t that direct sun at the Rose Bowl blind RN during the game? Why no sunglasses and why is UCLA on that side of the stadium?
Maybe he wants to be blinded with the way the offense has played at times?
