Dragovic released

Nikola Dragovic was released at 12:16 a.m. this morning, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Web site. Dragovic was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of misdemeanor battery on a person he co-habitated with, according to a spokesperson for the LAPD.

Here's the article that's running in today's paper and on the Web site.

A few thoughts:

1. A misdemeanor means Nik would probably only get probation and not jail time. It also probably means the girl was not hurt too badly.

2. If Nik's clothes were indeed thrown outside the apartment on the ground then this woman probably was capable of physically attacking Nik. If so, Nik might have a self-defense argument if he did not use excessive force in defending himself.

3. If he used excessive force or had no right to exercise self-defense measures, then he has no defense. The law is biased towards women in women-men fights, as well it should be. In any event, it is a He Said-She Said situation so we will never know the truth because each will marshall the facts to suit their own version.

4. Perhaps the bruins will now lay off the Trojans for a while. Bad stuff happens on both sides of Los Angeles, and it does not necessarily reflect on the universities.

Yes, but it seems to happen to your teams a lot more frequently than to ours.

And yes, it does reflect on the universities. Especially when the official university response - or utter lack thereof - is factored in.

LJ and any other trOJans with nothing better to do,

This situation would only be similar to the thugs at SUC if he had raped her or pointed a gun at her before getting into the argument with her.

In no way do I ever except violence towards a woman, yet think about if you came home to all of your belongings thrown out of the house and onto the street. How would you react? Especially when coming home to a probably hysterical girlfriend.

Brian, is this the girl that was the reason that Nik was not interested in transfering to another school? Do you see it affecting where he plays in the future?

There is no way in hell his gf (ex) would have been capable of attacking Dragovic. I say that as I know her personally.

This really sounds like a bitter woman! So maybe when she cools off then this will be settled. Without witnesses or physical evidence this case will be difficult if it proceeds.

Perhaps we should wait to hear more details and both sides of the story before we become the virtual Judge, Jury and Executioner? Until more details come out and we know what happened its ridiculous and unfair to draw conclusions. I think we can all agree that men physically intimidating or assaulting women is unacceptable. The University response is appropriate. They cannot comment with clarity until all the facts come out.

Why should anyone lay off on the trojans? Ever notice that when this stuff comes out about SUC it's "same (stuff) different day" but when something like this happens to a UCLA player it's HUGE NEWS. The difference in the reaction alone is startling. For the sake of the reputation of my University, I'd much prefer it to be a shock when these things happen rather than just another daily occurrence. It's not that bad stuff happens on both sides of LA. It's that bad stuff ALWAYS happens on your side and rarely happens on ours.

by california law if the cops are called to a domestic dispute then someone has to get arrested. even if he did nothing wrong someone has to be arrested under california law. let the courts decide if he was wrong...

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
