Here is installment XVII:

For football, is the JC signing day different than HS? Is there a reason why, if they're different. And what are the dates?
Yes, it is different. The JUCO signing period is ongoing. I don't have specific dates, and I don't know the reason why it is different.

Wooden loathed calling timeouts--he was almost embarrassed to do so. We all know about Howland's love affair with timeouts. Do you think they've ever discussed this difference in strategy and how do you imagine such a conversation would play out?
I would think they discussed it, and I picture it going something like this:
Coach Wooden: I didn't like calling timeouts. I wanted my players to feel prepared and feel like they were equipped to handle anything.
Coach Howland: That is a great way to coach. Absolutely brilliant.

I think everyone's playing for 2nd behind North Carolina. Do you see any team out there that could match up well enough to beat the 'Heels at a neutral site tournament game?
I haven't seen that team yet, either. I was actually talking to an assistant coach the other day, and we were talking about that. We concluded that one team out there will be able to knock the Tar Heels off, but whether that is in the regular season of the NCAA Tournament was open to debate. Whenever it happens, though, it will be a huge upset because I think UNC is far better than everyone else.

So 1 SC recruit changed his mind--great! But don't you think it's going to take a lot more of that, including guys talented enough for SC to make UCLA their 1st choice?
I think it will take some big wins next season, and the season after that. It is a slow process. Westwood wasn't built in a day, and neither was Troy. It takes time, and right now UCLA has had a good recruiting run, but the gap in talent remains enormous.

I went to Staples Center and, despite sitting in the absolute last row, could hear the ball bounce. Do you know if the court has a microphone or sound amplifier? How about Pauley?
I have no idea. It is probably just the acoustics of the building. I don't think Pauley has one.

Thought experiment: Could you imagine the late Andre the Giant getting in and out of a SmartCar in under a minute?
Yeah, if someone had the jaws of life and krazy glue. Cut the car in half and let him sit in it, then glue the car back together, then cut it open again. See? Very simple.

Vidal Hazelton, the SC WR, is down to Mizzu and Rutgers. Good luck.
Thanks, but not sure I want him at RU. If USC didn't want to play him or red-shirt him this season, I wonder what USC is trying to say.

Do you project Logan Paulsen to hold onto his starting TE job or has Moya earned himself that title? Who is better at blocking? I would imagine LP.
I think Paulsen gets the job because Moya is undersized, and not nearly the blocker Paulsen can be. Moya is more of an h-back type of player.

Jordan Farmar once mentioned that he didn't realize how much exposure he'd get playing at UCLA. What does this "exposure" entail?
Media coverage. On television, locally in the newspapers and nationally. When UCLA is doing well, everyone across the nation will read about them.

Is that you, Mr. Bob Ueker? Just curious.
