Any UCLA assistants to follow?
New Mexico State football coach DeWayne Walker said the Aggies will run the same defensive system he did at UCLA. Therefore, it would not be surprising if Walker tried to lure a defensive assistant or two with him to Las Cruces. When Rick Neuheisel retained Walker as defensive coordinator, it was important to Walker that Neuheisel also retain defensive line coach Todd Howard and linebackers coach Chuck Bullough. All three received raises at the time.

Same defensive system??? Geez! I hope the Aggies don't have to play in Utah next season!
If the assistants bolt, so be it. I'm sure the new DC will install his own system and have certain assts. he wants to bring in. I really don;t think there will be an apprecaible drop off in the D next season. In fact, I expect it will be a whole lot better due to experience and a better offense to keep the D off the field so much.
Why on God's green earth would a linebacker coach and defensive line coach leave UCLA to coach at New Mexico State for less salary?
And all you homers, please tell me:
Why do you act like losing Walker is the worst thing that could have happened to the program? I am actually happen for him -- he gets a head coaching gig and an opportunity to show all that he can do. I am happy for ESPN -- one more African American D1 coach. And I am happy for UCLA. We can shake off some more dust from the Karl-era. Win-Win-Win, if you ask me!
What? I'd move from Southern California to Las Cruces any day of the week. I hear the babes are great, but the cacti are pricks!
ROFL
Hey Jill, would you leave Southern California to cover a New Mexico team for half the salary? Be honest.
To UB,
What are you smoking? Just look at the defensive numbers before DW came and look at them now and he did this with no real change in talent. If we had DW in 98' we would have won the NC.
Believe this, Carrol is happy to see DW leave.
"If we had DW in 98' we would have won the NC."
False, broseph. That defensive meltdown in the Miami game was strikingly similar to the defensive meltdown in the final drive of the Notre Dame game in South Bend. Word of advice: Stop living in the "would have," and start dwelling in reality. DeWayne Walker is O-VER-RATED. Sure, our defense is somewhat "tougher." But they aren't anything compared to USC's defense. Those guys are monsters.
UCLA would have won a championship UB. DeWayne Walker was the best thing to happen to UCLA stop denying it.
UB in denial? You say, "DeWayne Walker was the best thing to happen to UCLA . . . ." Who's smokin' locoweed, pal? Yeah, I was warm and fuzzy all over when BYPuke put up 59 on Walker. Or, how about the Utah game last year. Gimme a break. Was he a good DC? Yeah, OK. Was he a GREAT DC? No way, Guiseppe!
A position coach could become a coordinator, or assistant head coach, titles that elevate the pay which could put them in line with the salaries they earned at UCLA.
or... maybe they have smog/traffic/wanna be celebrities?????
Don't be dense. BYU had only four scoring drives that began outside of UCLA territory (three, really - one started at the BYU 47). Even in a 59-point shelling, a significant amount of the blame in that game can be laid at the feet of the offense. Not only did they continually turn the ball over inside UCLA territory, but they couldn't keep the defense off the field - UCLA's time-of-possession was only 22 minutes DESPITE having so many attempted drives (due to BYU scoring so much). The Bruins had only 3 possessions longer than TWO MINUTES (the pair of missed field goals and the punt at the end of the game).
As for Utah, the Bruin offense had seven total turnovers. UCLA and Utah had almost identical yardage totals (386-373 in favor of the Utes).
The last drive of the Notre Dame game was indeed a weak prevent. That was a bad call. You know what, you're right. Holding a team that averaged 31 points per game to 20 total (including the late score) on their home turf, with a senior Heisman candidate at QB, getting no help whatsoever from the offense yet again? Terrible job. I'm ecstatic the guy's gone.
I moved from Colorado to New Mexico - a city you've never heard of - for my first job as a sports reporter. And no, I would not move back to New Mexico. The people are friendly and the cost of living is dirt cheap, but it wasn't for me.
