Howland's request
Here's the basketball notebookI wrote for today's paper. I think the headline (and reporters don't write them, by the way) is a little misleading. The headline says Collison told not to pass up shots. Actually, Ben Howland told Collison he wants him to take more jump shots, and he wants other UCLA players to do more get more looks for Collison within the offense. It's not like Collison is passing up open shots.

Well, Collison does pass up some open jumpers. And so do others on the team. But that is attributable to their desire to play the game as a team sport. Now, with Collison lighting it up this year, he needs to get more looks than usual. Espicially since Josh's jumper has been MIA so far this year. I still think if Josh were to 'catch and shoot' rather than 'catch, look to pass, pump fake, step off and shoot' he would be much more effective. HE THINKS ABOUT IT TOO MUCH! Look at Keefe: He is more fluid and is thinking less about his jumper and he is shooting 50%. He needs to take a few more shots and build on his confidence. And Jrue !!!! Son, take it out of cruise control. You have all the tools and need to use them every game. I find you a little tentative. Don't worry, Coach UB will not be made if you hot dog just a little! Promise, I won't.
