More on the Norton-Neuheisel saga

| | Comments (29) |

Here's the story I wrote for today's paper in which Rick Neuheisel denied he was using Ken Norton's name as a possible defensive coordinator to try to sway recruits if DeWayne Walker leaves. Norton talks more about the situation as USC prepares to play in the Rose Bowl.

A lot of cross-over comments from all the SUC-UGLA usual suspects on the Wolf-Dohn blogs. All the comments were either hypocritcal (my school does not engage in "gray-area" recruiting) or boringly and uncreatively ugly towards the other school.

The one "fact" is T.J. Simers quoting Pete as saying that there were a half dozen of his recruits who had been told Norton was going to ucla. Simers has put out an offer to recruits to 'fess up. I think the truth will come out and somebody will be embarrassed-- Norton or Neuheisel.

I think Neuheisel made an error in judgment in coming out with an official denial regarding Norton's comments.

It is not hard to figure out who are the recruits that are common to UCLA and SUC and being recruited by norton. Flournoy already said he had not heard Neuheisel saying it. He would be a prime example. Maybe Randall Carroll or Pressley could be asked? OR Manti T'eo? I think that SUC does not come out good on this one. Why would UCLA even say it? The only recruits it would matter to would be those being recruited by Norton. Then all they have to do is call Norton to find out and UCLA would lose all credibility.

Norton, who is responsible for recruting the city section, is trying to make excuses for losing Pressley and the other players he will soon lose.

Carroll, feeling the recruiting heat from UCLA for the first time since being at USC, is making panicky moves. The first signs of this were his constant complaints to the media about how physical UCLA was during the UCLA/USC game. Carroll is starting to crack....

Physical is a far cry from cheap shots and dirty. ucla got drilled in that game, and thanks to SC's FG kicker having an off day, the score should have been far worse.

And the Pressley matter was pure Kabuki Theater. Funny how he enrolled right after the "switch." Clearly he had applied far earlier, and this process had long been in the making.

Last I check, SC was in the Top 5 in the recruiting rankings, and ucla not even in the Top 20. But I confuse the issue with facts...

Carroll can still remember the score three years ago at the Rose Bowl. He can't cover the points this year.

He can't stand the idea of playing for the 4th time in the Rose Bowl in January.

I will agree with you that usc might have had 6 more points if he nailed all his field goals. That is far worse? If UCLA didn't take a few dumb penalties (especially roughing the kicker which allowed them to score the go ahead touchdown), the score would have been far closer. I am sure you can agree to that.

"Physical is a far cry from cheap shots and dirty". Is that how you rationalized Mark Sancheese "alleged" sexual assault charge or how Mauluga explains his "alleged" battery charge. How bout them cheap shots Anonymous. I think Anonymous is really Kenny Norton and his penance is obfuscate the truth for being a bad recruiter on all the ucla blogs. Does anyone think Petey is really using "a better la" as a recruiting tool for inner city recruits?

Carroll is worried about some more commits to make Norton go to the press to complain about something so trivial. Could you imagine if Carroll went to the press and said Neuheisal was up to his old tricks. That would be like lobbing a missile with a direct hit on the Bruin Campus.

I love how Neuheisal has gotten under Carroll's skin. Isn't it funny how Carroll uses the press to make accusations and then when the press questions him about it, he runs away!!

One thing is for sure. $c hasn't won a bcs championship since Chow left for better pay and it hasn't even been to a bcs championship game since Bush left for the same reason.

Jill, in your article you say you have "sources" that say this did happen. Are these sources recruits or are you basing it off of what Carroll said?

Norton the knuckle-dragger has shown his true colors again. He has definitely gone over to the dark side. And, I don't care what RN tells SC recruits as long as they come over to our side.

Ah yes the triple...
Petey cries when the video of his sonny boy "Spaulding" showcases nepotistic mediocrity.
Petey cries when a 4-8 team gets a little physical.
Petey cries when his best "fingertaped" recruiter gets gets beat for the #1 tight end in the country.
One instance is an anomoly. Two is a trend. Three is certifiable evidence that Pete Carroll needs his blankie.....WAAAAAAHHHHHHH.

Jill,

Can you clear something up in your story? You said:

"Norton confirmed his allegation that UCLA was using his name to try to sway recruits. Sources said there were repeated instances in which this happened, and that Carson High tight end Morrell Presley, who de-committed from USC and committed to UCLA last week, was one of those cases."

Does this mean Norton is alleging sources said there were repeated instances, or does this mean you have independent sources outside of the USC athletic department who verified this? I guess basically are these your sources or Norton's sources?

Thanks.

Well at least this puts to rest the idea of Kenny returning to be DC should DeWayne get a HC job. I think that would have been a terrible mistake. Kenny was miffed when Dorrell wouldn't add him to the UCLA staff in 2004 with his only experience being a year as an assistant at Hamilton HS so he ran across town to Petey. Notice that Sark didn't ask Kenny to join him at UW?

Of course I'll tell you about my sources. As much as you want to know. Do you want their email addresses? Home phone numbers? Shoe size? Let me compile the info and I'll post it right away...

Good observation uclabruin84. Sark did not ask Kenny to be on his staff. Interesting.

Well by now, everyone probably knows that Walker will soon be named NMSU new head coach. http://newmexicostate.rivals.com/ Kenny must be kicking himself in the but since he could have waited ONLY 24 hours and maybe he could have rejoined the Bruin family.

Stupid Kenny

If only he had kept his mouth shut he could have joined the greatest team in the history of the offseason for this historic offseason run whereby the bruins crack the top 20 in recruiting rankings and call it a victory over a team in the top 5.

We need Geoff Strand to lead us in an eight clap to celebrate our victorious offseason!

Jill, I'd like to second Jesse's comment above. Can you clarify who those "sources" were that supported Norton's account? Has anyone spoken to Pressley to confirm that he was told what USC says he was?

Scout.com is reporting that Walker will be named NMSU head coach. Jill/Brian - any confirmation to this? They also list Bobby Hauck (Montana HC) and Rick Hunley as possible DC candidates at UCLA...

This entire matter will be laid to rest shortly, given that DWalk will likely accept the position of head coach at New Mexico State. A defensive coordinator will be hired, and it probably won't be Ken Norton, Jr.

If anything, it appears that the recruiting wars are intensifying. I do find it a little strange that USC is claiming unfair recruiting practices. It was only a couple of years ago that SC sent a limo to pick up Brian Price. This year it was PC's two visits to Loyola High football games.

Duh 1 and 2,

We aren't asking her to name her sources. We are asking her to clarify whether she is saying that Norton is alleging sources, or whether she has her own sources who have told her such things. Doing this does not identify her sources, it merely clears up a vaguely worded paragraph.

Jill,

Thanks for clarifying. That helps and your latest version is much clearer.

Duhs,

Wrong on two counts. Jill did clarify, and I wasn't intending a pot shot. It was just vague. Its no big deal.

Dohn,

Is it true that Pete's wife almost left him because he cheated on her? Over the last year or so I've read many posts about it and now that clown on BRO is bringing it up again. Is this something the media just doesn't touch because it's too personal or what?
