NCAA changes jersey rule
The NCAA today altered its rule regarding visiting teams not wearing white jerseys. Now, USC will be penalized just one timeout on Saturday, at the start of the game, as opposed to the previous rule of one timeout per half. UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel has agreed to burn one of his timeouts at the start of the game as well.

LOL Prodigal Bruin.
While the NCAA has CLEARLY fallen asleep at the wheel on the Reggie Bush AND OJ Mayo SCandal...they certainly awoke for this one.
The rule is improved, but why should a team be penalized even 1 timeout? If they admit the rule is wrong, there should be no penalty. Looking forward to seeing both teams wearing their home jerseys at the Rose Bowl.
Go Bruins!
This is great news. I've been hoping to see both teams in their colored jerseys again for many years. There is nothing that quite matches the visual spectacle of the Blue and Cardinal Red lining up against one another. But what baffles me is why the NCAA still thinks it worthwhile to invoke a token penalty (one timeout) for wearing the "wrong" jersey? By reducing the penalty from 2 TO's to 1, they are essentially approving the move. So why bother with any penalty? Either approve it or don't approve it.
The rule is contracting jerseys, why do they need to give up one time out? The PAC-10 has been asking for years to waive the rule for Rivalry games with no luck. Maybe this will start the ball rolling.
Forget about the Jerseys! Let them wear their home Jerseys. What I want to ban is the USC Band from playing at the Rose Bowl. I had the distinct 'pleasure' of attending the Notre Dame vs. SUC game last Saturday. Like with the UCLA Band, USC placed the Notre Dame Band far off the field and somewhat behind the bleachers in the Peristile endzone. The SAME bleachers that the USC band inhabits during the game. So, the visiting band is BEHIND the USC band. Then, I kid you not, every time the Notre Dame band started to play, the USC band would drown them out. Invariably -- every time.
Now, the USC band will come to the Rose Bowl and play incessantly over the home band. Just watch. They do it every time. I remember the day when there was detente between the bands -- or should I say courtesy.
For this reason, I suspect, the USC band no longer plays at Pauley and the Solid Gold Sound does not make it ti Galen. I'm all for banning the Trojan Marching Band from the Rose Bowl! Drone On!
If there are fewer timeouts, there will be less commercials (in theory). My guess is that there will be more TV timeouts in this game becaase there is no way the network is going to lose money because of Carroll's decision.
Neuheisel is showing class. I like it.
Perhaps the posters could follow suit.
Naaaah, would never happen.
Although I will say that this year the posters resorted to far less diatribe than in the past. Of course I don't think that has anything to do with L.A. types becoming nicer people, probably more to do with Brian Dohn setting the parameters on his blog.
why do we have to burn a time out for wearing the jersey were supposed to wear??
wow it took all of 24 hours for the NCAA to change this rule just for Petey?!?!?
crazy.
Hey Dohn,
ESPN reports that the Pac-10 clarified the rule for Saturday's game.
You state that the NCAA changed the rule.
Who's the best investigative journalist, you or ESPN? Inquiring minds want to know.
Coach Neu said he's excited about the uniforms, why complain?
909Bruin, Coach Neuheisel is voluntarily burning a time-out in order to even the playing field. He doesn't have to call a time out, but it's the right thing to do. It's called sportsmanship. And I think most fans are in agreement that having both teams wearing their home colors is good for the rivalry game.
There's nothing new about being penalized for violating rules concerning proper uniforms. In basketball, you're charged with a technical foul for each player on the court that isn't wearing a uniform that conforms to the rules. The aim in football was to make sure that opposing teams wear uniforms of contrasting colors, so white was chosen as the "color" of the visiting team. I think the one time-out penalty per game, though, is a good alteration of the rules.
Oregon should be penalized every game for assaulting our eyes.
