Neuheisel denies Norton's claims

| | Comments (34) |

Rick Neuheisel issued a statement today in response to a story in the L.A. Times. In the story, USC assistant coach Ken Norton alleged that UCLA is telling recruits that it will hire Norton if DeWayne Walker leaves. Here's the statement from Neuheisel:

``In response to comments made by USC assistant football coach Ken Norton, let me say that I have an outstanding defensive coordinator in DeWayne Walker. He has done a great job for us and I hope he stays at UCLA for many years. However, if he has the opportunity to become a head coach, I know he would do a fine job and I would support him in any way possible.

``That being said, I was sorry to read the comments Kenny made in the Los Angeles Times. I have not told any recruits that if DeWayne left, Kenny would be the defensive coordinator at UCLA and neither have my assistant coaches. Despite the fact that Kenny is a great Bruin, we have more than enough positives at UCLA to interest recruits and convince them that this is the school at which they can flourish both academically and athletically.

``There has been a lot of speculation about Kennys return to UCLA in the media and on the internet, and perhaps that has confused people about who has said what. If DeWayne leaves, I would consider several candidates for the defensive coordinator job.
Kenny probably would have been among those considered, with no guarantees.
However, his quotes in the paper say he is staying at USC, so we wish him well.''

I didn't want Kenny Norton before and I don't want him now. Coaches can switch allegiances, but former players can't. This isn't the first time he's said BS in the paper. Remember when he was ranting about how good USC is and how he can now understand how special it is to work in the hood.

Ken Norton is dead to me.

LOL - did KNJ just remove himself from consideration for a DC job at his alma mater (before it's even available) based on a game of telephone with a teenager...

Brilliant!

Sounds like Petey told Kenny to bow down and kiss the usc ring. Is this a mia culpa for Morrell Presley or is Kenny trying to cheaply get his name out there for a DC job. Who know with those gangsters at SuC.

We must remember that Ken Norton Junior was a football player before stringent academic requirements for admission were being enforced and it shows!

Anonymous said:

Yeah, with comments like that he wouldn't be admitted as a student now and, it would appear, as a coach either! Stupid is as stupid does.

Sounds like he's a total convert to the SuC cool aid and he'd only be a mole at UCLA anyway.

I don't think I have ever seen this type of recruiting intensity between both schools in years. I love it. However, "Kenny" is digging a whole for himself. Before he puts something in the paper, he should check his facts and double check again. That is what they teach you at UCLA. Reference what you are stating. Maybe he has been at SUC too long! hahaha!!!

We wish you well "KENNY".

Is Fredo Norton Jr feeling the heat for losing Presley? Isn't LA Fredo's recruiting area? Looking like Clean Pete is getting the whip out.

John Henry said:

I would have welcomed KNJ back to Westwood prior to this ranting in the LA Times. Now, I would not want him back eventhough as CRN stated he is a "Great Bruin". KNJ made it seem as if top recruits would ONLY go to UCLA if he was here. Don't give yourself tooo much credit. I love CRN quote below:

"we have more than enough positives at UCLA to interest recruits and convince them that this is the school at which they can flourish both academically and athletically".

Lets review:

Desean Jackson looked at the talent at SC and opted for Cal. It was not the beginning of the end for SC. MP looked at Blake Ayles and opted for us. He was not afraid to compete and SC would have loved to have him. Every year people will chose to not go to SC for a variety of reasons, this year is no different. The difference this year is that CRN and Chow convinced him to come to Westwood. STOP READING SO MUCH INTO THIS!

Norton certainly went beyond the pale when he said that Neuheisel was following a similar pattern that he had established at Colorado and Washington.

Ouch.

Neuheisel's response, if one were to read between the lines, was that if Norton were ever to be considered for ucla's staff, that door has been closed, and closed forever.

But the reaction of the ucla posters above is not very classy either. Norton has shown immaturity, but he was one of the alltime great bruins. Give him a little slack if you got it in ya.

WOW!!!! What a classless HACK. What do you expect from a guy who can't even get along with his own dad? How convenient that Norton and Carroll fail to mention USC's negative recruiting claims that Walker and Dorrell would be gone, in years past. Not to mention those SUC hacks trying to bribe UCLA committed recruits and violating NCAA rules with Limos. What a hypocrite and whiny little you know what Chetey Petey is to mention minor infractions at Colorado and Washington. What about that Conference Call to Joe McKnight with old Reggie Bush on the line? That was a clear violation of NCAA rules. Next time you should school your recruits before they go on TV and admit blatant violations of NCAA rules. I never want to hear about this HACK Norton EVER again. Benedict Arnold. CLASSLESS.

CRN was very gracious in his response. He made those SUC bums look like whiny little fools. SUC complaining about UCLA's recruiting tactics is like Rich White people complaiing about Affirmative Action or the AMT. PLEASE.

It's pretty funny seeing all the Bruin fans actually believing anything Slick Ricky says.

He was caught lying when he denied interviewing for the 49er job while coach of the Huskies. He claimed ignorance of the NCAA "dead period" rules when he sat in a car outside a recruit's home talking to the kid on the cell phone.

Oh, those NCAA violations while at Colorado ? He didn't know the rules there either.

Good luck UCLA, its only a matter of time with Slick

Well, well, well. Another shot has been shot across the bow. Look out below.

For all of my fellow posters who do not have a legal education, let me explain in a few short words that in a court of law, we judge truthfulness on the veracity of the character making the statement.

An NFL Hall of Fame great, College Hall of Fame member, and outstanding coach at one of the premier Academic and Athletic universities in the world = Ken Norton Jr.

vs.

A convicted NCAA Felon, who was convicted of several NCAA recruiting violations, and personally wrecked two football programs leaving them in ruins, and who now is trying to turn around a mediocre football program = Coach Rick Neuheisal.

Who would you believe if both coaches were on the legal witness stand? The choice is easy and self evident. Cheers!

Agree with those who say it's a complete cover for botching the Presley recruitment. It seems there are a couple of others out there at risk for them also, so couple that with internet rumors about Norton at UCLA and I think PC was looking for a strong statement to defend Norton's integrity. I don't know if crying to the Slimes accomplishes that, but to each his own.

Excuse me Lawyer John,

Exactly what violations has CRN been convicted of? LMFAO. Last time I heard, recruiting infractions are not a Felonies. You as an attorney should know this. He has never had any violations, infractions rather, which everybody is guilty of. He was also acquitted of the Gambling charges at Washington and won a multi million dollar settlement as a result. Also, please name one coach who has denied interviewing or going somewhere else, either the NFL or another College Program? Unfortunately, it is the nature of the beast. Coaches and players do it all the time. Please don't live with blinders on. Here is some sobering video for you to digest. It is non other than your very own Joe McKnight on camera admitting to having a conference call with Chetey Petey and Bushgate, in which Bushgate lied through his teeth and denied any NCAA violations to get Joe to sign with SUC. HAHAHAHAHA. The irony, Bushgate by being invlolved in the call is commiting a violation, yet denying others. Will you police your own team with the same vigor you have used to throw mud at UCLA? I think not. You as attorney should know better than to offer baseless opinions as fact. I offer unequivicable hard evidence. The smoking gun in Petey's hands. Enjoy.

Hey "lawyer" John, there is no such thing as an NCAA felon, you stupid idiot.

I went to UCLA law school where they taught me that felonies are serious crimes adjudicated in criminal court, not by a non-governmental, self-policing organization like the NCAA!

Get a refund, because you paid too much for that piece of toilet paper you call a diploma.

Stop referring to your your Mickey Mouse degree, which you obviously do not use, since you spend so much of your "free time" on a Bruin Blog instead of paying attention to your own, NCAA-violating program.

If possible, you give lawyers a worse name than they already have.

I feel sorry for Norton. Carroll just played him like a fiddle. Carroll instructed Norton to bring this up to the media in order to accomplish the following:

1. Try to take a crack at Neuheisel's previous recruiting mistakes and imply that he is continuing this behavior;

2. Make sure his recruits hear loud and clear that Norton's allegiance is with the Trojans; and

3. Ruin any chances of Norton getting a shot at the DC position at UCLA. Now Carroll can retain Norton as a recruiter (err, a LB coach) and never have to promote him to a position of prominence. The only school that would consider giving Norton a shot at coordinator was ucla, and now that dream is over.

voiceofreason said:

Hey BruinFaithful,
Why don't you get YOUR facts straight. Neuheisel wasn't aquitted of the gambling, he won a lawsuit of wrongful termination. He did indeed participate in an illegal NCAA betting pool, and admitted to the same. Also, coaches interview for other coaching positions all the time. However, the differece is most coaches admit it or decide not to comment. Slick blatanly lied about it. Twice. He is a serial liar.

Happy said:

I think that the kids are starting to see through PC and that is why their recruits are starting to look around. PC thought that they could hang on to some of their recruits or add more by implying that Norton was a good coach and would be in demand. If you are after a hot shot recruit, wouldn't you want them thinking that your coaches were great. "He is only our LB coach but he would be a DC across town".

This is a typical PC move. Slimey and typical of U$C. We are building something in Westwood, they are trying to keep the castle standing amid stories of it crumbling (which is far from the case). Speaking of cases, The Bush Case should come up this spring. Want to go to a school that will be hit with probation or a great university where you get the best education anywhere (not called Stanford). That is why PC talked Norton into this. OTherwise, KN is just a punk.

Hey, Voiceofreason:

The NCCA betting pool that RN participated in was not per se "illegal" if it was approved of by the Washington administration, which is what he proved with an internal email, thus the wrongful termination victory.

Come on, people. Do you really think that RN -- law school educated and a whole lot wiser now -- would actually publicly state that he and his staff DIDN'T use KN's name in recruiting if there was even a hint that they DID use it? He knows the truth will come out -- and he could be easily caught in a lie. Be real.
