No pep

A university policy will keep UCLA from holding its annual bonfire pep rally this week. Since it is the week before finals, there are no student activities with "amplified noise" permitted, according to a school spokesperson.

I am so livid right now, I can't even begin to describe how pissed off I am. I can't believe how WIMPY and PATHETIC our athletic department is when it comes to football!! Are they going to cancel the car beating too? Are they gonna just ask us to all wear red on Saturday in order to appear to be civil to the USC fans? Are they going ban us from tailgating on Lot H and require us to park at the Parsons Building? Are they going to force the Daily News to fire Dohn because only the REAL fans support him? That is what it is coming to!

i still don't understand the motivation... i'm a student, and i can confidently say that 99% of the students here wouldn't give a crap that it's tenth week.

for the record, we had a "bonfire" before the Stanford game... and by bonfire, i mean confetti machine. because of the wind.

Everyone write emails to the school. PLEASE.

In the school's defense, it was planned this way since the school year started. It wasn't just decided that we would cancel it because the team hasn't played well. It still sucks though. I thought it was the most ridiculous thing to have "Beat SC" week before the Stanford game. At least we won that game! And, 2 years ago, the bonfire was replaced by confetti because of wind as well. Maybe that's our good luck charm.....

Wow VB, you're really worked up over this. But take a moment and think about it. It makes sense...

if you had gone to UCLA you'd already know how seriously academics are taken and this wouldn't be a surprise to you...

This really sets a new low. What else is there to say?

Anonymous said:

UCLA Alumni is so concerned with their image, they ruin what little traditions we have left.

We had to change the name from Beat SC week to Blue and Gold Week because it was "offensive".

Really, because we sing, "The Rose Blow F*%^ SC" to the song "Ow!"

But "Beat SC Week" is offensive.

mindshed said:

It wasn't about "beat sc week" being offensive, it was about changing the focus from them to us (they call it troy week or something, and I've had sc guys point out that both of our campuses focus on sc during that week). That said, it should still be beat sc week.

I find the F SC chant during "Ow!" very offensive. We should show more class than that...

Anonymous said:

This is old news. They changed the Blue & Gold Week to the week before the Stanford game, and moved all Beat 'SC festivities to that week and shifted focus to Stanford. It was very lame.

cliq said:

ridiculous

i wonder if we had a better record, would we have had the bonfire?

is the ad trying to sweep this game under the rug already?

Sal C said:

I would hold the bonfire anyway. Screw admin and the Blockhead.

Anonymous said:

I think the F SC chant is pathetic, particularly the students who do it during the "Rose Bowl" chant/song. It shows just how desperate we are when we have to chant F SC, and seems especially so when the opponent we are playing on a particular week isn't even SC.

Anonymous said:

Aren't they having a bunch of football recruits in this week?

I'd think a pep rally might be nice to show them school spirit...

Cali said:

Like I said before and this will be harsh for most of you but don't go to the games. That is the ONLY way to get their pathetic attention!! Hit them in the wallet. I know everyone well say its not fair to the players but trust me, if explained they would understand. This is for the future!!!

i wish someone would light a fire under VB so he can take me to the Vet. :(

I hate how "F__ SC" has crept into the Rose Bowl chant. We shouldn't stoop to vulgarities like the Oregon fans, and it's embarrassing to bring your young kids to the games with students show that kind of low-class behavior.

I'm at absolutely amazing at how much attention this is getting. First, this IS old news and was known at the very beginning of the year. I am currently a 2nd year and am definitely a die-hard Bruin fan; go to all the games, keep up with the teams, etc. But to be honest, I really couldn't care less about the stupid rally that took place earlier this year instead of this week.

The whole thing is juvenile anyway; focusing an entire week not on building up your school but tearing one down. Yes, 'SC is a part of Bruin tradtion. I understand that and am first to hate a Trojan like anyone else. But the school changed it to early in the year. Would I have prefered Beat 'SC stuff this week? Yeah, I would have. But I really don't care at all. I DO have finals and while the "noise" excuse it bogus, Saturday is already going to take up my day, so I wouldn't of gone to any of the rally's and stuff anyway if it was this week since I have to study.

It's a meaningless rally, lighten up guys. The real fans are going to the game to support the team and cheer them on everyday. Let's pray for a miracle and upset tomorrow!

GO BRUINS!!

This has been known for a very long time. But whoever did the scheduling forgot that UCLA is a school, an institute of education, and planning our rivalry game to be played two days before Finals officially start is bogus. I know people that actually have finals during the SC game and can't go because of it, as well as finals on Sunday.

I just hope the scheduling disaster that occurred this year doesn't repeat itself, regardless of whether or not we can have a stupid pep rally and waste money on lighting stuff on fire. We already had a beat sc week, before the stanford game, so I don't know why all you old guys are complaining so much about that.

First your marketing dept with the Fresno State ads, now this.

Really sends a message when your own administration doesn't support the team. It's not like this is your bowl game or an upset this week would go a long way toward recruiting and erasing some of the disappointment of the season.

please excuse my ingornance, as i am not an alumni, but a fan. isnt this game played during the same timeframe every year? how were the past several years not affected by the finals, but this year it is?

Mike H class of 1990 said:

The PR department has not been at it's finest this year. Why can't they just move the bonfire to someplace like Spaulding Field - a little further away from the residence halls and students. Hey, maybe we could exorcise whatever demons keep injuring our players by burning the practice field...

Anonymous said:

First, lay blame on the Athletic Department for agreeing to move the game two weeks later on the sked per what I'm sure was ABC's request. They should have known that campus policy prohibits "amplified noise" during 10th week.

Plus, It's UCLA, students have been studying for finals since LAST week.. at least!
It's really a shame as it used to the one time for many students they can see and hear from the players live. many will just come down from the dorms/apartments to hang out.

HomeBru said:

Oh no, some students said the F word. Oh no, we call it "Beat SC" week. Are you guys serious? The difference between this week and every other freakin week is this is the week we play SC. And we hate them all the time, so F-SC is always appropriate. It IS beat SC week. We SHOULD be focusing on beating SC. What is wrong with you people?

Bailey Author Profile Page said:

A couple things/facts:

-Athletics schedules FB games based largely upon TV coverage.

-Athletics does NOT have ANY control over the "Beat SC/Blue and Gold Week" bonfire or festivities as the Student Alumni Association usually puts these on. They have to get approval from the Fire Marshall and several other offices have to get involved.

-Athletics does NOT have a "PR" department. The Marketing Department made the Freson State ticket ads without the consent of CRN. Marketing also has nothing to do with the potential bonfire or rally. So while they seem connected, they really aren't.

Anonymous said:

For those of you that seem to think the bonfire is not being held because of the team's record, you're absolutely wrong. This is a one-time change due solely to the fact that the university has a policy preventing amplified sound during the week. In fact, the bonfire and rally were not the only things affected because of this. UCLA student groups were also forced to celebrate World AIDS Day last week, and thus not when the rest of the world does, because the University policy prevented any "noisy" activities from taking place on campus. It's a blanket policy, albeit a ridiculous one, that the University refuses to waive for any group.

Yes, it sucks. But, in an effort to still have some form of a spirit week all the activities were moved to the week before Stanford. It's not a permanent change; Next year, presuming the USC game is not scheduled after 10th week, the activities will be back during their proper time frame.
