Tradition returns to the rivalry
Pete Carroll announced today, on his website, that USC will wear its home cardinal jerseys at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. By doing so, the Trojans will lose one timeout per half, as they will be in violation of a NCAA rule. It will be the first time since 1982 that both teams will wear their home jerseys in the game.

This is

I'm not sure what to make of this. Is this arrogance? (They think they can beat us without the time outs, so who cares?) Risk taking for tradition? Or has there been some deal cooked up, and UCLA will simply leave a timeout on the board each half?
Brian, I'd love to hear RN's take on this!
No timeouts needed to beat Bruins, sign Pete Carroll.
The original proposal by Pete Carroll when Neuheisel became head coach was that the home team for the rivalry game would always burn a timeout with their first possession of each half every year.
It will be interesting to see if Neuheisel got on board.
If Neuheisel is in agreement with this, he should put the word out right away. Most everyone I talked with is upset at SC for being arrogant, and treating the Rose Bowl like it's their home field. They dont' really care much about a tradition that hasn't been a tradition for over 25 years.
I'm pretty sure this is carroll saying "you suck" while making it sound like "look at me, i love tradition!" Very SC of him.
This is an even bigger insult than going for it on fourth down and running up the score in 2005.
It's amazing how many choices become more attractive when you're a thirty point favorite.
I think some of you are misunderstanding the tradition, yes the Trojans wore their home jerseys at the Rose Bowl but the Bruins also wore their home uniforms at the Coliseum.
It's a sign of city unity, not one-upsmanship.
I really hope Neuheisel continues the tradition next year when the game is at the Coliseum.
This was CRN idea. Early in the season they agreed because they thought visiting team would lose 1 first half timeout, when they realized it was 1 per half both backed out.

Get your history right. If you had read the statement by Carroll the tradition ended in 1982 when we moved to the Rose Bowl. USC never wore their home unis in the Rose Bowl and we never wore them in the Coliseum after we moved out.
I hope Neuheisel continues it next year only if we believe we can win comfortably with two less timeouts.
I think it is weak for UCLA to allow this. It sends a msg, yeah, the Rose Bowl is your home field too since you win here so much.
Another soft moment by UCLA.
Get your history right Slippery Pete! sc did wear their home uniforms in 1982 at the Rose Bowl. It was the famous Karl Morgan game. Gotta know your history before trying to criticize others...
Neuheisel's gotta call an unnecessary timeout at the start of the game to even the playing field out. That is one way in which the tradition will continue and maybe a modification to the rule can occur.
I think we all should hold off on the opinions until we found out whether or not both schools agreed to this..
However, a return to this tradition would be a welcomed site.
neuheisel will call a timeout at the start of each half to counter them. it might actually work in the trojan's favor as the only time ucla ever musters any offense is at the end of the half when running the two-minute offense.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but why doesn't everyone give Pete Carroll a break? Assuming he and CRN spoke about this, it still takes a little bit of guts to forfeit a timeout each half. Yes I understand that his trOJans are the clear favorite to win, but let's applaud his gesture at wanting to spark continued fun in this rivalry game.
What if Brian Dohn had reported that Pete Carroll was unwilling to do this? Would people be commenting on how Pete is too arrogant and unwilling to take part in this tradition.
Go Bruins!!
This has to be the utmost in arrogance...to willingly give up a timeout per half. Also, there's going to be enough red in the Rose Bowl anyway...the last thing UCLA needs is the Trojan band running amok on the field, planting that stupid sword, then hearing the "visiting" fans erupt when their team takes the field in home uniforms.
I can't wait for the day when uniform color really is our biggest issue.
The only person I hate more than Pete Carroll is Rick Neuheisel. He ruined two good programs and has the character and personal ethics of a rat. Boy, did he sell UCLA a bill of goods. After Colorado, this lawyer (USC law school grad) should never have been allowed near college kids again. Read five-part series in the Seattle Times on his 2001 Husky Rose Bowl team which came out during the summer. That will tell you all you need to know about Slick Rick. Good luck UCLA . . . He's a smooth talker, but has trouble with the truth and accepting responsibility for his actions (recruiting violations at Colorado, allowing wanted criminals to play at UW).
By the way, I grew up in SoCal as a UCLA fan and hate the Trojans. Gotta part way with the Bruins until this scumbag leaves.
Mr.Anonymous right above me, well it seems as though you are screwed. Neuheisel is going to be here for a very long time. I don't anticipate that this team will keep on playing the way it been in the coming years with the recent recruiting of stellar players. It takes a lot to screw your own university over.
Wow we finally get what everyone wanted HOME/HOME jerseys and now people still complain..LOL
The Rose Bowl is USC's home field...always will be.
I just think it is going to look freakin sweet when both teams are lined up at the line of scrimmage wearing their home unis... Looking the way they are supposed to look.
Let's be honest. No team in college football has a good looking road uni, or much less cares. Having the UCLA Blue and USC Cardinal both present on the field gives this game an added boost of pagentry and I am really looking forward to seeing. Hope it continues for many years to come.
Considering that (1) the Trojans are willing to lose two timeouts just to get the color they want, and (2) the Bruins appear ready to do the same just so they'll be able to wear the color they want next year, I trust we'll never again have to listen to any SoCal jibberjabber about Oregon's uniforms.
There's yet to be a time when the Ducks put a win at risk just to wear a certain color.

Wolf is reporting that it is only a first half time-out. Most teams have at least one left over anyways.
