Walker and Utah State

| | Comments (15) |

From what I'm hearing, UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker's representation will be calling Utah State to say he is withdrawing his name from consideration for the program's head coaching job.
I'm also hearing San Diego State is starting to show more interest in Walker.

good! imo usu wasnt a good position for Walker. He could do way better!

I hope he stays at UCLA, but I wouldnt blame him for taking the SDSU job. Any good coach wants to run his own program.

this is getting serious. I think its a done deal D Walk is not at UCLA next year.

I really would like to see him at sdsu if he's not at ucla of course. Either way, we will be ok..

D Walker would be crazy to take the SDSU job. No one can win at SDSU. Although there is a wealth of talent in the region, they have no interest in going to a WAC school. They go to PAC 10 big 10 sec etc. The last time SDSU was a winning program Don Coryell was the coach. Brian Sipe was the QB. Don't do it D Walker. It's a black hole.

It is widely known that the SDSU is a dean end job. Just ask the last few HC's. Their athletic department financially is a disaster. It's a no brainer for him. There will be better jobs than SDSU, they won't be hard to find.

if he's smart, he would wait until Slick blunders again & step in at UCLA as the desperate replacement.

I begrudgingly approve of Coach DeWayne Walker taking the SDSU job. It would be a fine move for him. The weather is good down there and its a short drive to Tijuana for some real Mexican Food. It would really show something if he can turn around the program at SDSU.

thats true. i would absolutely hate for him to leave UCLA, at least until we see what he can do with a defense thats not allowing less points than the offense D: because after 13-9 (i was there so STILL cant get over it) i think hes got some real genius in him.

what im saying is, when we actually have an offense that wont keep the D on the field for more than like 40 mins a game consistently, thats when well know how good he is, really.

but ya, if he can turn SDSU around, that would DEFINITELY open some doors for better jobs for him. I like D-Walker a lot.

San Diego State should be a good stepping stone for him.

Best of luck coach.

Lawyer John, you are a USC hack...I've seen your posts on the Wolfie blog blasting us. I doubt you "begrudgingly" want Walker to bail, since he has shut down the USC offense the last 2 years.

Brian,

Is he under consideration for the Washington job?

Again, Lawyer John on this blog is a fraud and an imposter. He copied my monikor from the SC blog, much as "VB" has been infringed upon. This "Lawyer John" is an embarrassment to me. And, yeah, it is true I state the truth about ucla on the SC blog, but soften it up on this blog.

How exactly do you "soften" up the "truth" about UCLA? Whatever! There is no way that this OTT character is a real lawyer. At least not in California. Simply peppering your sentences with legalease like "infringed" and "begrudgingly" does not make a person a lawyer. I wonder if this character even went to USC.

SDSU may not be a good fit for Coach Walker. I'd like to see him get a job in a better conference such as the Pac-10. I read that Sarkisian interviewed for the Washington job, so it appears that head coaching experience is not a prerequisite for the Washington job.

No matter where Walker ends up, he will always be remembered as the architect of 13-9.

As someone who follows the local SDSU program down here, the program is certainly on life support although Utah cracking a BCS game that gives each MWC member $500,000 and a recent student fee increase will keep the Aztec program around a few more years.

Top flight HS players have and always will go to Pac 10 schools as well as other major national programs. However, there are plenty of solid second tier athletes in SoCal to be competitive with MWC teams.

If State ends up hiring DW, he need only get the Aztecs to a couple of lower tier bowls before moving onto bigger and better things. BYU and Utah are the 800 pound gorillas of the MWC but it falls sharply after those 2 programs.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
