Walker's future

| | Comments (16) |

I'm hearing UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker could have the New Mexico State job if he wants it, but he is yet to make a determination whether he wants to pursue it. Walker, according to my sources, could also wind up with the San Diego State job by the end of the week.
One thing that could help Walker on both counts (besides a splendid showing by his defense against USC) is the timetable of both schools. San Diego State wants to move quickly, but New Mexico State is willing to takes its time.

Brian -

Are we still at 5-1 on your board or have the odds changed since Friday?

A season opener vs. Neu and the Bruins would be cool.

I just don't see his hurry. I think he is being very short sighted

Neu will have this program turned around by 2010 and Walker will be in line for much better jobs then. Hang on for two more years, and he will have his choice of much better situations.

why would anyone want to live in NM over SD....

San Diego State. It's the Circuit City of college football. Anyone remember the coach of Long Beach State when they gave it up?

It will be interesting to see if Neuheisel promotes from within or goes outside the program when Walker leaves.

It should set the tone for his tenure at UCLA.

It'd be hard for Walker to turn down 900k - 1mil a year and have a head coaching gig in Southern California.

With Walker ability to recruit Los Angeles, San Diego would seem a great place for him to go. San Diego is a great place to recruit to, the academic standard are low enough not to be a problem, and a program that can only move up as they are at rock bottom now. San Diego was a national power once, unlike Long Beach State, Valley State (now CSUN) and the other Cal States that have dropped football.

Wasnt George Allen at LB State when they gave it up? He recruited Terrell Davis to play there. Not bad.

If San Diego State was so easy to recruit to why have they been so bad and been so void of talent. Take it from someone from San Diego, originally and knows the area well its not that easy to recruit to. It should be but for whatever reasons it is not.

and deserves a shot at being the lead dog someplace. He's impressed me with his schemes and adjustments. His teams are well prepared and play hard.

He's a good football man.

Why not be the Head Coach of a second rate program instead of the D Coordinator of a second rate program. You people are too biased to see the reality.

A Haiku

Coach DeWayne Walker
the whole reason for success
No Walker No wins

Walker essentially has his own staff. I don't even think it's possible to "recruit from within". I seriously hope there are better hires out there than Norton. He might be good but it was extremely childish of him to go to USC. Also, Carroll runs that defense ... I wouldn't read too far into a position coach on that team. Also, if he taught those linebackers to lead with their helmet on virtually every tackle, I'm not interested in his services at UCLA.

Dean - Norton wanted to coach at UCLA but only went to USC after Dorrell wouldn't give him a job - not even a graduate assistant job. Carroll created a position to bring Norton and his Super Bowl rings into his staff. Say what you want about him, but he's still a Bruin, a high energy guy... and has been pretty successful at SC.

The last time I heard Norton talk about UCLA he said:

"You're a Bruin for four years but a Trojan for life"

Somehow I don't think Pete Carroll is sweating it.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
