Does it surprise you at all that the majority of questions and comments on this blog, year-round, seem to be football-related, even though UCLA is a “basketball school”?
No, because the numbers of folks interested in football is demonstrated every Saturday in the fall. Football is an event, basketball is a game.

Drew Gordon is a somewhat demonstrative player and I’ve noticed him visibly frustrated by not getting the ball down low when he has position. Have you noticed the same? What’s Howland think about that?
I have noticed it, and Gordon just needs to mature. He’s used to being a focus within the offense, but that is not the case at UCLA. I have not talked to Howland about it.

Does CRN want to change the overall game atmosphere at the Rose Bowl? Do you think he cares or that something not on his priority list?
He cares about everything involved in the program, but I don’t think it is high on the priority list.

I don’t get the negativity about J’Mison Morgan. He looks like an excellent prospect to me. He’s the only guy on the team with reliable low post moves, has great length and is more bouncy than he looks. I just think he has trouble hedging on D. Your thoughts?
I agree, but I think he is a product of Kevin Love. Everyone saw what Love was like as a freshman and expected Morgan to be similar. Morgan has a lot to learn, and I think everyone should keep that in mind. Sometimes good players take time to develop, and folks should remain patient with him.

In one of your interviews, Dragovic said he hadn’t expected to be at UCLA for very long. Does that mean he thought he was an early-entry NBA prospect, or did he think he’d be going back to Europe? Or…?
He thought he would go back to Europe and play professionally. It was very difficult for him to leave home and be so far away, and he felt the stress of that early in his career. Plus, he was riding the bench when he could have been making close to six figures playing in Europe.

Have you had a chance to get Howland’s thoughts on the 2009 commits? If not, it would be cool to get a mid-season update on where they are at, and how it looks like they’re progressing. Does he follow them closely during their season?
He follows them to the extent of talking to the players and the coaches, but he doesn’t go out to see them. He knows the talent level of each player, but is so engrossed in the season that he is not going to go crazy watching players coming in next season. The recruiting he does now is on uncommitted kids.

When I’m accessing the Daily News with my blackberry the Sports column has only the following links: News; Lakers; Dodgers; and USC. NO UCLA! Can you work some MOJO with the powers that be?
I will send this to the tech guys and see what they say.

According to David Thorpe on ESPN.com, Westbrook is the #2 rated rookie in the NBA, KLove is #5, and Luc is #12. Did you think they would each be contributing so much their first year? Which is the biggest surprise to you?
I am surprised with how much Luc Richard Mbah a Moute is playing and contributing. I thought he would be limited offensively and that would cost him minutes. Love is playing about as much as I thought he would, and even though Westbrook is scoring a lot, he is playing for a bad team so I think that inflates his numbers a bit.

2 minute offense. Who made the calls in the game? The guru or Chow?
Norm Chow calls the plays.
