Night Owl Special
I'm hearing UCLA linebackers coach Chuck Bullough remains the leading candidate for the defensive coordinator's job. One guy who may be interviewed for the position is former Houston Texas secondary coach John Hoke, sources said. If anything, Hoke and UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel will at least speak.

"The other day during the basketball chat you mentioned UCLA had an "ace in the hole" with Hasiak. What did you mean? IS he simply solid on UCLA or does UCLA have something to lure him if he starts to reconsider?
I was waiting for someone to ask this question, but I cannot get into it at this point. I will when the time comes, but not at this point. Sorry, but let me just say UCLA has a plan to keep Hasiak on board if he begins to waver big time."
I think you owe your readers some explanation?!
Spit me out Brian
I prefer the mellower taste of the Mourning Dove combo, but sometimes the night owl special really hits the spot.
Thats good eating!
Brian owes the readers nothing. He knows everyone is now wondering about the 'ace in the hole' statement. We as readers also knows he has to protect his UCLA sources. If and when the time is appropriate, Brian will surely tell the story. There has been over 30 comments, today alone, about the ace in the hole statement. Chill it will come when the time is right.
Well Jon Hoke was just hired today to be the Bears DB's coach, so that might rule him out...

I think Dohn's sources are beginning to look a shaky! What gives Brian? Is Hoke gonna do a Hasiak or is there an Ace in the Hole to bring him to Westwood???
Hoke's hiring by the Bears was announced this morning per Yahoo! Almost 10 hours before this Night Owl Special post...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090113/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_bears_hoke
Also on the Bears website as well;

Please explain ;)
Dohn knew about the hiring, hence his use of the word 'former' in the post.
But a DC of an SEC defense, sounds like a resume booster to me.
Dohn already knew Hoke was fired by the Texans quite a bit ago therefore 'former'.

He never bothered to check the news posted on the Bears website, Chicago Tribune and Yahoo News(actually posted more than 12 hours earlier than Dohn's Special post), !
So I suspect he must know of an Ace in the Hole to get Hoke to Westwood...
The suspense is killing me Dohn. But I bet all the excitement/suspense will be for not and the ending will be anti-climatic.
not all ace in the holes work out... that's why they are kept on the DL to begin with! dohn gives solid reports and provides up to date information, so if what someone else told him behind closed doors didn't work out, there was a reason why it wasn't publicly reported in the first place.
Sorry guys Brian meant to say "ace in the hoke" not "hole"
The story is Hoke would coach Hasiak to become a great UCLA corner. Hasiak really wants to be a DB rather than play the boring OL position (seems everyone wants to go on the defensive side these days). But when Hoke wavered and went to the Chicago "Bears", Hasiak mistakenly thought Hoke went to the Cal "Bears" and committed there and Brian's "ace in the hoke" became moot.
Isn't that correct Brian?

Your fricken kidding me right? He owes us an answer. If it wasn't for us readers then there wouldn't be a blog. No readers means blog is shut down.
He is the one that made the famous quote "ace in the hole" relating to keeping Hasiak so since he is solid with the Bears he should now tell us what is going on. Quit hiding behind the "sources". Us readers won't forget this and I can tell you once signing day comes and is gone this question about the ace in the hole will be brought up again!!!!
I am the almighty ACE IN THE HOLE. Obey me Hasiak! Obey me!!!!!!!!
What? Didn't work? Tedford had pocket Aces in the hole? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Believe in CRN. Though it is a very important recruit, the show must go on. Hasiak is just a kid, just like the other ones we switched up. UCLA is on the rise, with or without this kid.
You guys act like you are Dohn's boss. He does not owe us anything. He finds out information, and only says anything about it when he feels it is solid, however, these are 17 and 18 year olds that he is talking about here. As we all know they change there minds like there is no tomorrow, ace in the hole or not. So just chill out, good luck to Hasiak, and there are still plenty of other kids out around the country to recruit.
Chuck Bullough knows the defensive system well and that system kept us in most of our games last year. I say give him a shot for the sake of continuity. We don't need another guy to come in and go through another learning curve.
I can bring continuity, which means I am scared to death of teams that run a spread offense. I am the right choice!!!
Great hire - not. 2 more years of failure here we come.
"Ace in the Hole"
That's what she said.
Who is the "Mind Blowing" candidate to be DC. With the death of the ACE IN THE HOLE this now becomes the number one issue that needs to be discovered.
Could we all be looking at this wrong? Mind Blowing doesn't have to be positive. What if we have a "Mind Blowing" poor candidate? I am glad that Dwalk saw the writing on the wall and left when he did.
Its gonna get ugly
Mini Helmet:
You are not being relentlessly positive. Has your passion bucket sprung a leak. We still have 2/3rds of the Dream Team. 5 Star kids are flocking here to play for Chow.
We may have lost Stan but Toma is solid in his commitment.
Just because a guy took a job as a defensive backs coach in the NFL doesn't mean he won't listen to a job about being a defensive coordinator at UCLA.
If I remember correctly, DeWayne Walker coached the secondary in Washington and took the defensive coordinator's job at UCLA.
And I believe I wrote Hoke would get a phone call, but Bullough was the favorite.
Good point Dohn, cause all you did say was they would atleast speak and all these guys are getting down on you. I think you should require login/password for comments. that would cut down on some of these silly posts by the anonymous bashers. this site is suppose to be about UCLA sports, not about bashing you because some kid changed his mind or because a reader doesnt like what you are reporting
OK Brian fair enough but why didn't you report that "Hoke, who was just hired as a defensive backs coach by the Chicago Bears..."
Did you just not know? Forget to Google "Hoke"? The way you wrote it sounded like you didn't know about this hire by the Bears IMO ;)
Brian,
Any idea of a time frame for selecting a new defensive coordinator?
