On Hasiak de-committing

| | Comments (45) |

I was in a meeting all morning, but wanted to let everyone know Hawaii offensive lineman Stan Hasiak has pulled back his commitment to UCLA and committed to California. I will have more on this later.

Is it my imagination, or do we only have 2 OL commits (assuming the JC guys don't qualify)?

J said:

Please Jonathon Ogden come and help coach. These young O-linemen will follow him to UCLA.

Wow bringing in ONE high school offensive lineman this year. Thought this would really be an area of focus. We will never improve without some big uglies up front.

Is the "ace in the hole" that Brian mentioned going to help us out here or is he gone for good?

Anonymous said:

Obviously the ace was a duece of hearts - no one bothered to double check the hole cards.

What was the Ace in the Hole, Dohn?

THIS SUCKS! STUPID HASIAK!

ACE IN THE HOLE said:

ACE in THE HOLE is an imposter. I am the original authenticated ACE IN THE HOLE as detailed by Dohn. Don't settle for imposters when you can have the original.

PS I am taking the dirt nap

I am saddenned to report that my close cousin ACE in THE HOLE has passed. He had a short but sweet life during the Bruins brief run as Champions of The Offseason. He will be remembered fondly.

where's the stellar Slick Rick recruiting class now? stealing a few skill players from USC means absolutely nothing now, since no top Lineman are feeling Ricky. i hope a running QB comes in soon because it will be the same song again this year. games are won in the trenches, first and foremost!!!

That's just a dumb comment. There is still time left. Remember, he didn't get the name "Slick Rick" for nothing. The uglies are coming...no sweat. Bruins keep your heads up. Don't let one little de-committ spoil what has been a very good recruiting season. Keep the faith in Neu.

Nooo!Ok I've been to Cal, as I'm sure many of you have, and I go to UCLA, I don't get why anyone would go to Berkeley over Westwood.

"I don't get why anyone would go to Berkeley over Westwood."

How about because since 2003 Cal's conference record is 32-19, but ucla's is only 27-24.

How about because since 2003 Cal's conference finishes include a first place, a second, & a third, against ucla's lone third place.

How about because since 2003 Cal has has finished the season ranked 4 times in the coaches poll (3 AP) including a top 10 finish and ucla has a lone #16/#13.

Maybe Hasiak wants to be a winner...

At least he didn't commit to the U of South Central. Presumably, he doesn't own any body armor.

Brian - did this guy not have the grades to get past admissions - i.e. another DeSean Jackson?

tom962 Author Profile Page said:

Hey SC guy - who's the higher-ranked decommit: Hasiak (#16) or Presley (#1)? Let's see how much those Figueroa Tech math classes helped you.

No doubt this is a MAJOR blow to Rick's recruiting persona as well as a personal slap in the face to Coach Chow. Norm (and Richard Brehaut) have worked very hard on securing Hasiak's commitment. This is a head-shaker. Hasiak had an assured long-term future here and would have been the anchor on an OL that will develop and improve immensely in the next 3 years. Sad and inexplicable.

Academics or just a desire to go to Cal?

Stan FAN said:

definitely not academics...
"Hasiak, who has long been coveted across the country by college recruiters, has been a UCLA commitment since mid-October. However, he's stated publicly that it was a soft verbal. Now, after evaluating every school that has recruited him, Hasiak made his final decision today.

"I just needed to take some more time with the decision, but now I'm comfortable knowing where I'm going to go," Hasiak said this morning. "So I'm going to call the other school's here in a bit, and let everyone know that I'm going to Cal.

"What really put Cal over the top was just how they recruited me and where I felt I fit in the best. I love the coaches and I love the area, and the academics are top notch. It's just the best place for me.

With Cal, well, it all started with Coach Lupoi. He's been my recruiter for a year and a half now. He's a great friend now, and he's a person that I have a lot of respect for. At the same time, I see him as my coach too.

"Coach Tedford is unbelievably cool. He's just a great guy and a players' coach all the way. It is real obvious. I'm also looking forward to talking to the new O-line coach (rumored to be Steve Marshall) once it is announced. I know he's been in the NFL; I think he's been with the Cleveland Browns."

so stop all the speculation, he made the choice thats best for him

This is a major blow to the OL, but Rick better get to work on the DL because that recruiting has been just as bad in 2007, 2008 and now!

Right Stan Fan, b/c the kid is just going to come out and say "yep, it came down to grades...."

Maybe academics wasn't the issue - who knows. But that long post doesn't show answer the question. We offer academically questionable kids all the time with no guarantees they'll get past admissions, including some of the JUCO linemen. You should read this blog more.

Ouch!!!! This one hurts.

No doubt Bruin fans across town will chalk this up to the old tried and true "Hasitak didn't have the grades" excuse. This is such an old excuse that gets trotted out each recruiting season. Its the same old wine in different bottles.

Like I said before, you could tell who the bruins were at the game on Sunday, even without their identifying marks-- you know, full of attitude and negativity, and in the end blow-hardedness. Winning with dignity is not a bruins' trademark.

WOW thats AWESOME and true WINNER stats!!!
you guys hang Banners for all those acomplishments??

Sorry for the barb at the end. I should've just said we don't know what the reasons are. Academics could've had nothing to do with it. But it's been an issue with some decommits before.

hmm...while you're correct - we win and win often.... that's an objective fact. The rest of your comment is merely an opinion... from a trOJan, no less.

if anyone in this town has a reputation for having no class in victory - it's the trOJans and their 6 year old bandwagon nation.

HAHAHAHAHA said:

ONLYTHESPOOF is comic relief. Win with dignity? I wonder why you never replied to the person who wanted your take on Leonard Washington's low blow on Blake Griffin?

Academics? Please; typical trojan thinking all it takes is spending money. When usc starts to report all scores and grades of incoming students we'll see what your ranking is. You do know they only report about half the incoming class and combined SAT scores from multiple sessions right? I guess if I worked for a joke of an academic institution Institution I would do the same to try and make the losers who pay so much feel better...

Anonymous said:

HAHAHAHA!!! No one in their right mind would EVER EVER EVER think SUC is better academically than UCLA, Cal, or Stanford. SUC is barely above ITT Tech academically.

Cali said:

Brian,
Wasn't it you that said the staff had an ace in the hole to keep Hasiak? I guess that hole doesn't have a bottom right about now. So what was it?

Silverlake Bruin said:

sorry to see him go, but best wishes to him.

Would everyone stop harping on the "ace in the hole" talk? If I had to guess, the "ace in the hole" was visiting Hasiak's family in Canada to seal the deal. Coach Neuheisel and Coach Palcic visited them and everything seemed to go great, but Hasiak still de-committed so let it go.

Bruinator said:

Damn you STAN!!! I was wondering where that "soft verbal" was leading. Things were looking so good the past few weeks. Abele may have to play OL after all.

Let's hope RN finishes strong for us...

ONLYTHESPOOF said:

Well, I guess Coach Rick Neuheisel now knows how Coach Pete Carroll felt when CRN stole Morrell Presley from the Football Programme across town.

In my opinion, Bruins fans should not be such blowhards as they are. After all, these are just 17 year old kids who change their minds often. Boys will be Boys. You win some and you lose some.

Best of luck to Stanley Hastiak on his choice.

No doubt it hurts, he's a great player. However, consider this: we'll be adding Maiava, Sheller, Capella, Abele, Taylor, Ryan Shott (walkon), and possibly either (or both) Sua'Filo or Phillip, Johnson and Williams (long shots), plus a further refined Darius Savage, I think the line depth is looking pretty good for next year. There will definitely be a glaring need for tackles if we can't get Sua'Filo or Phillip, but considering that the 2010 recruiting class is full of talent and we're already leading with a couple of top national recruits, I'm not worried.

You have to put it in perspective and look at the bigger picture. Of course it sucks that we lost an elite recruit like Hasiak, but we'll develop a better line with or without him.
