Some DC news

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel will speak with Montana coach Bobby Hauck about the Bruins' defensive coordinator position, but sources told me linebacker's coach Chuck Bullough is the early favorite.
However, Neuheisel told me he would not make a quick decision just for the sake of making a quick decision. I'm hearing Neuheisel wants to see if there are any NFL coaches interested in the job.

I give Neuheisel props for not rushing into a decision when anyone would feel the need to find a quick hire during the stretch run of the recruiting season. I like that he's willing to wait to see if an NFL hire will be available. I also like the fact that Bullough is a early leader for the job--showing loyalty and concern for continuity.

Looking forward to the hire.

I sure hope it's not Hauck. No offense, but I don't think nepotism is the way to make a decision this big. Let's promote Bullough and move Hunley in to linebackers.

Cbruin Author Profile Page said:

No way Hauck for DC. That would cause a Nuclear meltdown for us fans. I rather see Bullough, Hunley, or even Burton mentioned. You never know if the NFL guys will jump back in to the NFL plus they have to recruit. Some like it but others don't.

During this past week's Q&A, you suggested that it was unlikely RN would looks at Bullough for the DC job. Is that because you doubted he thought he was up to the task or because you were hearing he wanted to look elsewhere?

Maybe he can lure Mel Tucker out here from Cleveland. Doubtful considering he's getting some HC interviews, but he was a great DC at Ohio State and may be willing to go back into the college game if nothing pans out elsewhere.

Hauck would not leave Montana. He has been offered head coaching jobs at other schools. He is a legend at Montana. next

Well, if we are going to consider NFL guys, I want Jim Johnson, or at least a JJ clone. He would never come to the college game, but I love the way he calls a game - blitz, blitz, and if in doubt, blitz again.

Anonymous said:

Why Hunley? DW coached the corners last year. Who would coach the corners?

I want someone who can create good blitz packages and use them. No passive bend dont break.

Classy move by CRN not immediately ruling out Bullough even if he might not be his time to take the reigns.

It's really a tough call either way you go here.

On one side of things, promoting Bullough would likely result in minimal scheme changes for the defense, and continuity is always a good thing. But who knows what this guy can do when it comes to scouting, game-planning and making in-game adjustments.

On the other hand, many/most of the key defensive players on the roster are still young (Moore, Ayers, D. Carter, Sloan, Westgate, Dye, Hester, Woods, Love, Jones, Holmes, Larimore, are all frosh).

So, IF they were going to bring in an NFL coach, NOW would be the time to do it. An NFL coach will likely bring his own scheme/staff, and many of the current key players will still be here 2-3 years from now, hence, have 2-3 years to learn a new system (which is when I would expect the team to be ready to compete for a Pac-10 title anyway)

If the defensive roster were slated to be full of upperclassmen, I would say keep as much continuity as possible. But since next year's roster will still be virtually all UNDERclassmen, there is still plenty of time to learn a new system before this team as a whole (Off, Def, SpTms) would be competitive anyway. The timing works out very well for them to bring in an NFL coach with real experience/credentials.

My money is on Rick Neuheisel. it's a safe bet he will make a choice soon. There's no reason to roll the dice. Pick a sure thing. That way you know you're getting your money back at the finish line. Odds are he won't pick somebody he has to gamble on. Take your time and don't use a lottery system and you'll be better off. It's in the cards that he will pick a winning choice out of the pool soon. And then he can get back to recruiting in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. At the end of it all, he will have a huge stack of chips to cash in. That's the betting line, at least.

I'd like Bullough. I don't think our defense needs to be changed. Walker effectively used our players the last three years - Bullough knows how DW operated, how to use his players, and his schemes. I think - as our younger (more talented) players develop, our Defense will be amazing with Bullough at the helm.

Is Norton out of the question? Is CRN's approach to wait and see about NFL propects also keep the door open longer for CRN and Norton to reconcile? Carroll has to decide whether to promote Norton to DC. If he doesn't, would Norton want to come UCLA's way?

VB Author Profile Page said:

WHY WOULD YOU WANT NORTON? Are you joking me? Keep that ignorant traitor over in the ghetto. We don't need him. I say promote Bullough to DC. He knows Walker's defense and he can keep continuity on defense. Why introduce a completely new scheme to our players? We don't need more confusion next year.

BUT FORGET ABOUT NORTON! DUDE IS AN IDIOT.

VB is glad that DW is leaving saying he wont be missed, he hasnt done much here etc.. but now he wants his clone to be Def.Co.???

When did I ever say I was "glad" DW was leaving? I am angry BECAUSE he is leaving, and because he was so anxious to get out of his gig here at UCLA. I never said I was happy he was gone.

And Disbarred John, my comment was not racist. It is a FACT that USC is located smack dab in the middle of the Los Angeles ghetto. Sorry, but every time I go to a game at the Colliseum, I get death threats just walking to and from my car in front of Roscoe's Chicken 'n Waffles. FACT.

VB said:
pfffff... What "good times?" Walker hasn't done much for us at all. There were plenty of defensive meltdowns that have caused us to lose games. Our defense was ranked 48th in the nation this year. That isn't that great. I'm sorry. UB is right, it is nothing to lose sleep over. We'll replace Walker easily. EASILY."

VB said:
Good riddance. The only great thing that you did for UCLA was 13-9. Now we are the 64th best defense in the nation. Woop-dee-doo. Have fun in the scorching heat, Walker.

Bring on Norton.. pffff....

bruins love to throw around the idea that USC is somehow located in the Los Angeles "ghetto." Funny thing is that in fact it forms the southern border of downtown Los Angeles, has the beautiful rose gardens and coliseum forming on its south side, Galen Center on the east, and historical Adams Boulevard to the north with Staples Center a couple of miles away.

No, the use of the word "ghetto" is traditionally a racist word, starting out with anti-semitics using the word to describe the Jewish quarter in a city, and now more commonly used to describe a part of the city usually occupied by a minority i.e. blacks in Los Angeles.

bruins can rip SC all they want, but it is unseemly at best to tear down a race of people for where they live.

VB Author Profile Page said:

Hey LJ, would you let your daughter walk across the street by herself from USC to go to lunch? Would you let her hang out after dark outside of the "beautiful" USC campus?

Face it. USC is located in one of the most dangerous parts of southern California. So bad, in fact, that L.A. is being forced to build a buffer zone around the USC campus in order to keep the students safe. We park a mere 2 blocks away from the Mausoleum when we go to the games there, and TWICE we have been threatened with knives because we were wearing UCLA colors. And let me say this, the people threatening us were not USC alumni. But I'm sure they are the same thugs that USC recruits to play on their football team.

Bottom line: Why would you send your kid to school at USC where they can't leave campus after dark?

VB Author Profile Page said:

The USC campus is nice. No doubt. But the area surrounding the campus is GHETTO. Admit it.

VB, very classy response. Thank you for proving your point. Once you graduate community college, I am positive that you will make a fine college student.

The racist overtones of the word 'ghetto' are undeniable and repugnant to anyone with even a short memory. It implies that the members of the community outside the 'ghetto' refuse to allow minorities the same opportunities for the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness that they enjoy. The word 'ghetto' is a miserable double-edged sword, slicing into the heart of any democratic society. It encapsulates the essence of bigotry: hatred, paranoia, fear, suppression, extermination. Please don't use it to describe the area around USC. People living in that area have the same opportunities as the rest of us. We are not suppressing them. Instead of attacking the area, focus on the USC football program and the ethic it instils in its players. Look at the illegal helmet-to-helmet contact, the arrogance, the 'turning a blind eye' to despicable acts both on and off the field.

LAWYER JOHN said:

"For the Record," I love that phrase. I always use that phrase to clarify facts or evidence in a court of law whenever I am making a brilliant oral argument in court. It is especially useful to use that phrase in closing arguments.

So, for the record, let it be known to the court and this blog that LAWYER JOHN always goes on record with his comments, just like when I am giving brilliant oral arguments in a court of law. In fact, LAW, WORDS and SPECTATOR SPORTS are my life. To wit, I hesitate to toot my own horn, but I have been blessed with a bit of excellence in each of these areas. Cheers.

...And the funniest thing is that those arrogant, unethical thugs that USC suits up all come from that very area of living that you are standing up for. I'm not trying to hold anyone down. The mere fact that I have been threatened to be "shanked" because I was innocently walking to a football game says a lot about an area. I guess if "ghetto" is too offensive, maybe "dangerous, gang-infested war-zone" is more fitting?

I actually smelt the trouble before it happened. I gave VB a lil nose flare to warn him. But it was too late, the SC Thugs punked us.

LAWYER JOHN said:

I begrudingly admit that the area around USC, more aptly, the area southeast of the Los Angeles Coliseum, has become slightly dangerous and infested with crime and drugs. Truth be told, when the University was first founded it was placed in the Bel-Air of the time, amongst the elite and many mansions. But time has taken its toll and the elite moved out further West whilst the University has proudly stayed in the same neighborhood all these years.

That said, the situation is nothing that a few high electrified fences, foot patrols, stun guns and billy clubs cannot solve.

VB,

I know you're just trying to rip on USC but you should really do so in another way.

As much as I hate to agree with some of the former posters, knocking the residents of a neighborhood because of their economic status is a form of racism and elitism. I don't know you so I won't make that kind of accusation.

I do suggest that you stick to football jokes.

I'd also like to add that Lawyer John is an idiot.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
