Today's theme

UCLA players had a theme today to why two of the last three games were losses. They said more dribble penetration is needed from the guards to help the offense, and fatigue is a factor.
Alfred Aboya said the bench needs to produce more to give the starters more rest in the first half for later in games.

Substitution patterns again are an issue. Bobo comes in when Gordon draws his third in the first half, plays well (2-3 and a few boards, plus more active in the paing) and doesn't get out of his seat in the second half. Given the guy a chance, no one else was stopping Brockman or the drives by Thomas, Overton and Dentmon!

I agree with BruinGirl. I'd also like to see Malcolm Lee get more playing time. I love the kid's energy and on-ball D.

I'm not sold on Malcolm Lee or Drew Gordon. I guess Howland isn't either.

I sometimes wonder if BoBo just needs some daily motivation when he's not with the team. Someone to get him into practice early - maybe some extra workouts etc.

There's nothing like realtime experience. Ben relies totally on practice performance, and yes it's a good disciplinary routine. He will probably stay with that unless the team really tanks and Ben has no other options. Opposing coaches used to say "nothing in practice prepares you for what UCLA brings on their D". Similiarly, nothing the frosh do in practice will ever prepare them for real game situations.

As for Malcolm, the dynamic of the team changes when he is in as he brings an athleticism and match-up issue that makes us harder to cope with. But you won't see him do a whole lot if he gets no pt. The ancillary benefits for giving the youngsters more pt are obvious and necessary. Rest the starters, more real experience thus faster growth, and we go nowhere without their help. What good is a run at the tourney if by then the frosh are still lacking in real game experience.

DC is totally playing un-DC like.
Bobo will always be flustered if he gets comfortable playing against his teammates but not against opposing players who play for keeps. I mean, how much does Gordon and Morgan learn if they only have to play Keefe, AA2, Drag, Shipp every day.

What about the DEFENSE? NO mention about the defense? Our defense is terrible. Coach Howland has gone offensive on us.

Agree with the above post. We need a balance. Right now, it seems as if we are putting a little more emphasis on the O vs the D. Pomeroy's rating suggest that our defense has suffered considerably the past couple of games.

I find it funny how UCLA complains about fatigue and so forth, while USC who has less talent and is undermanned due to redshirts and injuries compared to the Bruins don't complain as much when players like Dwayne Hackett would have to play for 40 minutes.

I don't buy this as it is a cop out. They are young kids and should be able to pick themeselves up.

And I am a UCLA fan speaking.

To the above poster... you can't compare the two. SUC plays zone from time to time (which can rest their players). UCLA plays strickly man-to-man which is EXTREMELY tiring.

How about Aboya starts grabbing defensive rebounds before talking about the bench?

With the recruiting classes brought in every year, ucla should have more depth than any other school in the Pac-10. They should be the one to rotate in fresh players and wear the other team down.
All these high school All-Americans can't be trusted to play a few minutes here and there?

More depth??? That"s the rub. When you are as good as UCLA, the players don't stay around long enough to give you any depth.
