Answers, Part III

Here is the third set of answers:

Is this potentially the best football recruiting class you’ve UCLA pull in since you have been covering them?
I think last year’s was pretty darn good, but this could be the best. It will take some time to know that, though, because the offensive linemen need to develop. I look at two things from this class, and that is the offensive line and speed on offense. Two huge things for UCLA.

What was the biggest reason Hasiak switched back? I thought he and his father really liked Cal?
It is where he always wanted to be. He was extremely stressed the last month of the recruiting process. I talked to him frequently (although didn’t always report it because he asked me not to) and he was swept up with emotion during the Cal visit. Within days of returning from the visit, he was already re-thinking his commitment.

Do you see any of the incoming OL recruits starting next year?
At some point during the season, yes, but much could depend on how many of the JUCO kids are qualified. If they all make it (a real long shot) UCLA could have a new starting five, although that will not happen. But at least UCLA will have at least five new offensive linemen to look at, and maybe seven.

Morrell Presley… Starter?
Sure, in a year or two. He is not big enough to be a blocking tight end, and is more of a hybrid type of player. He is talented, but Logan Paulsen could be a first-day NFL pick in 2010. Presley won’t step in front of him that easily.

Very excited about the new speed coming into the program. That being said, have you heard if either Carroll or Thigpen have plans to continue running track at UCLA?
Both want to run track, but we know how that goes. If it fits into the schedule and doesn’t conflict with football workouts or practice, they will run track. Both were told during their recruitment they could run track, but again, we’ll see how that goes.

I don’t recall anything approaching the flurry of blog posts you made on Wednesday both in the number of posts and the extended period of time over which you posted. Have you ever had such a busy day in your years as a journalist?
Yes, I have had busy days like that. Covering baseball in the offseason, there is a lot going on. The winter meetings are 15 hour days, minimum, of standing in hotel lobbies, talking to agents, scouts, front office personnel, and talking on the phone. Wednesday was busy, but it was a fun busy.

If the NCAA Selection Committee were to meet today, what kind of seed would you envision UCLA getting?
I think UCLA would get a four seed because it has no quality road wins and is yet to beat a marquee team, and no, I don’t count Arizona State as a marquee team. I’m actually doing a story for Saturday on UCLA’s RPI, and how the lack of big wins could hurt its seeding.

Has Bullough mentioned or done anything, so far, that is a notable departure from Walker’s style?
He wore a tie during a recruiting weekend recently. In all seriousness, no, he has not. And I don’t expect him to do anything much different than Walker. They are similar in their beliefs.
